Vicksburg’s floodwall murals are due for some wider exposure when they’re featured in Friday’s edition of &#8221Look Around Mississippi“ by Walt Grayson on WLBT-TV.

Grayson said he long wanted to tell the story of the project, which started in Vicksburg in June 2001 when local resident Nellie Caldwell and a group of friends came up with the idea after visiting Paducah, Ky.

That river city has more than 40 murals on a floodwall painted by artist Robert Dafford and his crew, who have painted 15, so far, at City Front. More are planned.

Each mural depicts some aspect of local history, and almost all have been privately funded at $15,000 each.

Grayson and his crew were in Vicksburg Tuesday taping the feature and taking the city’s scenic tour. Caldwell will be featured on the footage, explaining the background of the murals.

Grayson, who said he has featured Vicksburg on &#8221Look Around Mississippi“ more times than he could count, said the murals are an attraction every town should have.

&#8221Just the fact that they’re there and that Vicksburg thinks enough of its history to present it in such a way,“ he said. &#8221Any town with the space and the history should have something like it.“

He also hopes to pique people’s interest across the state by featuring the citizen-driven initiative.

&#8221Most folks probably don’t even know they’re there,“ he said.

While Grayson said he has been &#8221looking around Mississippi“ since he was a child growing up in Greenville, the segment has been a part of WLBT’s lineup since 1990. In that time, he has featured Vicksburg’s McRaven Tour Home, Vicksburg National Military Park re-enactments and The Duff Green Mansion, to name a few.

The riverfront mural feature on &#8221Look Around Mississippi“ will be shown at 5 p.m. and 10 p.m. Friday.
