Dean Hill started his senior season for Porters Chapel with a flourish. Now, he’s ending it the same way.
PCA’s starting catcher will play for the North team in the MPSA Class A baseball all-star game tonight at Trustmark Park in Pearl. The game is scheduled to start at 6 p.m.
“It’s definitely better than the last game we played. That one we lost,” Hill said, referring to the 11-9 loss in Game 3 against Benton in the second round of the Academy-A playoffs.
Hill will continue what is becoming an annual tradition at PCA. The school has had at least one representative in the all-star game every year since 1999.
He’ll also be a part of history. Tonight’s game is the first at Trustmark Park not involving its usual tenants, the Mississippi Braves. Hill noted that PCA played a game in Smith-Wills Stadium earlier this season, and didn’t expect to be in awe of his surroundings.
“It’s probably not going to be any different,” he said.
Hill took over as the Eagles’ starting catcher this season after three years on the bench. He started out strong, hitting two home runs in his first three games before adding another a few games later.
He cooled off considerably after that and finished the year with a .277 batting average, three homers, 10 doubles and 20 RBIs. What he lacked in offensive firepower, Hill made up for with his intangibles. He played a crucial leadership role for a young team on the rise, pitcher Michael Busby said.
“He really stepped up toward the end of the year as far as being a leader,” Busby said. “He’s our senior. That’s who we look up to as the main guy.”
