Jennie P. Carr

MERIDIAN – Jennie P. Carr died Saturday, May 21, 2005, at Regency Hospital. She was 82.

Mrs. Carr was a longtime employee for Mississippi Valley Gas as a cashier. She was a member of St. Patrick Catholic Church, the Women’s Auxiliary of the Knights of Columbus, the TOPS club and the Aces Club of St. Patrick.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Leo Willis Carr; three brothers, D.N. Piazza, Tommy Piazza and Ben Piazza; and a sister, Gertrude Ring.

Mrs. Carr is survived by two sons, Robert E. “Bob” Metzger and his wife, Paula, of Raymond and Karl E. “Rick” Metzger and his fiance’, G.G. Butcher of Andalusia, Ala.; three grandchildren, Eric, Jeff and Robby Metzger; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Monday at St. Patrick Catholic Church with Father Frank Cosgrove officiating. Burial will follow in Catholic Cemetery with James F. Webb Funeral Home in charge of the arrangements.

Beatrice Hubbard

Beatrice Hubbard died Monday, May 16, 2005 at River Region Medical Center. She was 64.

Ms. Hubbard was a homemaker and a member of Traveler’s Rest M.B. Church. She was also a member of the Knights & Daughters of Tabor and Friendship Tabernacle No. 391.

She was preceded in death by her adopted father, Adolph Hubbard and maternal mother, Leona Wynn.

Ms. Hubbard is survived by her adopted mother, Thelma Hubbard of Vicksburg; a brother, Sam Turner of Greenville; and others, including Nathaniel Winston and Ursula Henderson.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Monday at Traveler’s Rest M.B. Church with the Rev. Thomas Benard officiating. Burial will follow at Cedar Hill Cemetery.

Jefferson Funeral Home has charge of arrangements.

Wesley James

Wesley James died Tuesday, May 17, 2005, at G.V. “Sonny” Montgomery Veterans Administrative Medical Center in Jackson. He was 78.

Mr. James was a veteran of the Korean War and a member of the Baptist faith.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Dave and Maude Sander James; a brother, Carnell James; and a sister, Mary Ella James.

Mr. James is survived by two sons, Broderick Jones of Romulus, Mich., and Keith James of Southfield, Mich.; five daughters, Mattie James of River Rouge, Mich., Crystal James of New Orleans, Maria Van Rooijen of Romulus, Leslie Jordan of Monroe, La., and Felicia James of Vicksburg; three brothers, Sonny James of Detroit and Dave James and Frank James; a sister, Regina James of St. Louis; 17 grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Monday at Jefferson Funeral Home with the Rev. Robert L. Miller. Burial will follow at Pleasant Hill Cemetery.

Visitation will be at the funeral home from 6 to 7 tonight.

Marvin Wayne Roddey

OCEAN SPRINGS – Marvin Wayne Roddey died Friday, May 20, 2005, at his home in Ocean Springs. He was 57.

Mr. Roddey was born in Jones County, reared in Port Gibson and lived most of his life in Vicksburg.

He was a machinist for Marathon-LeTourneau for 24 years and was employed by SPI/Mobile Pulley Works of Mobile, Ala. Mr. Roddey was a member of Glad Tidings Assembly of God Church of Ocean Springs.

He was preceded in death by his father, Edward R. Roddey Sr.

Mr. Roddey is survived by his wife, Peggy Jennings Roddey of Ocean Springs; two sons, Jimmy Roddey of Port Gibson and Rouben Roddey of Vicksburg; two stepdaughters, Sandy Rushing Dent of Ocean Springs and Beverly Rushing Yearwood of Vicksburg; his mother, Christine Hayes of Port Gibson; a sister, Tina Gomez of Vicksburg; four brothers, Edward Roddey Jr., of Laurel and Odell Roddey, Buddey Roddey and Paul Roddey, all of Port Gibson; and three grandchildren.

Services will be at 3 p.m. Monday at Fisher Funeral Home with the Rev. John Watson officiating. Burial will follow at Green Acres Cemetery.

Visitation will be at the funeral home from 1 p.m. until the hour of the service.

Pallbearers will be David Gomez, Joey Gomez, Chris Roddey, Luther Roddey Jr., Billy Sibley Jr., and Robert Benton.

Honorary pallbearers will be Steve Ott, Tay Everett, Frances Vriesen, Tom Adams, Jay Henley, Bob Rotunda, Bill Hennessey and Carl Dew.

James Mavin Russell

LITTLE ROCK, Ark. – James Mavin Russell died Thursday, May 19, 2005, at St. Vincent Infirmary in Little Rock. He was 85.

Mr. Russell was preceded in death by his parents, Robert Elmon and Zona Isadora Russell; a brother, Robert Clint Russell; a sister, Melba Smith; and a wife, Mary Lee Fleming Russell.

He is survived by his wife, Norma Lay Russell of Hensley, Ark.; a son, Ronald Mavin Russell of Brookhaven; two daughters, Barabara Zona Russell Pilgreen of Carrollton and Rhoda Ilene Russell Everett of Brookhaven; two sisters, Alene Ogden of Bastrop, La., and Marylene Johnson of Monroe, La.; seven grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Cox Funeral Home Chapel in Oak Grove with the Rev. Aubrey Everett officiating. Burial will follow at Kilbourne Cemetery in Kilbourne, La.

Visitation will be at the funeral home from 3 until 9 p.m. Monday.

Pallbearers will be Scott Russell, Len Smith, Chas Dillion, Rusty Everett, Les Graves II and Patrick Lay Daughtry.

Honorary pallbearers will be Clyde Lester, Art Johnson, Jim Pilgreen and Sonny Flower.

Charlene D. Smiley

Charlene D. Smiley died Friday, May 20, 2005, at Vicksburg Convalescent Home. She was 81.

Mrs. Smiley was born in Izard County, Ark., to Charlie Davis and Zada Garner. She was a certified nurse assistant at Martha Coker Convalescent Home and a member of the Baptist church.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Elwood Smiley; and a son, Roger Dale Smiley.

Mrs. Smiley is survived by two daughters, Shirley Norsey of Vicksburg and Sheila Harthcock of Yazoo City; four grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; a sister, Betty Janvier of Linder, N.J.

Services will be at 1 p.m. Tuesday at Leachburg City Cemetery in Leachburg, Ark., with the Rev. Bud Dixon officiating.

Visitation will be at Stricklin-King Funeral Home chapel from 10 to 11 a.m. Monday .
