Costly misses at the free throw line in the final minute of regulation denied the Warren Central Lady Vikes a chance to close out Wingfield Tuesday night.
The missed opportunities allowed the more experienced Lady Falcons to take control in overtime, pulling away for a 67-61 win over the Lady Vikes at WC.
For Wingfield, it was the second win at WC in a month. They beat the Lady Vikes in the semifinals of the Coca Classic in early November. WC came back to surprise Wingfield in Jackson last week, leaving Tuesday’s game as the season’s rubber match.
The Lady Vikes (6-3), however, were just 16-of-29 from the foul line, including four misses in the final minute of regulation.
“We didn’t make our free throws at the end and they made theirs. That‘s what made the difference,” said WC coach Donny Fuller.
“We had great effort and if we can bring that same type of effort, we’re going to win some basketball games,” Fuller added.
Wingfield coach Bobby Gates felt the Lady Vikes’ youth might have hurt them late.
“If you count the summer, this makes the sixth time we’ve played them this year,” Gates said. “I thought they might get tight at the line. That’s why we took a chance by just taking twos instead of trying three-pointers.”
With 1 minute, 25 seconds left in regulation, Brittany Willis knocked down a 12-foot shot to give WC a 55-51 lead. After Wingfield answered, Willis went to the line for a one-and-one at the 1:15 mark and missed.
Wingfield’s Candace Jackson missed badly on a three-pointer and then grabbed Karnina Bunch at midcourt. For Fuller, it was more than a grab.
“She tackled better than our football team and I can’t believe it wasn’t intentional,” Fuller said.
Bunch made both free throws to make it 57-53 with 53 seconds left. Wingfield missed its next shot and fouled Shantta Taylor with 42 seconds left, but she also missed the front end of a one-and-one.
Dominque Sutton then scored off the block to pull the Lady Falcons back to within two. Doyle made one of two shots for WC but Jackson hit a drive to make it 56-55.
Doyle was again fouled and made one of two for a two-point lead with 13 seconds left. Jackson again answered, driving right down the middle and tying the game at 57-all with 4.9 seconds left.
In overtime, Lorean Sutton put back a missed free throw to give Wingfield the lead for good at 60-57. The Lady Vikes made just one of six shots in overtime and were outscored 10-4.

Wingfield’s Richard Harper answered with two straight baskets and the Falcons (7-3), who won the Coca Classic in early November, improved to 4-0 on Vicksburg courts.
