Cookie Johnson began Friday night by receiving a nomination to the McDonald’s All-American game.
She ended the night by leading a Warren Central feeding frenzy against overmatched Magee.
Johnson scored nine points and 12 Lady Vikes scored in all in an 87-54 throttling of Magee. Carla Latham led the Lady Vikes with 17 points, while Saleda Montgomery netted 16 and Shondalyn Rogers scored 10.
“It was our senior’s last home game and I think they wanted to go out with a statement,” said WC coach Donny Fuller, who will guide his team against Vicksburg in the opening round of the Division 6-5A Tournament on Tuesday at VHS. “This has been an outstanding group of seniors.”
Johnson, one of those seven seniors and a two-time Vicksburg Post Player of the Year, is one of 1,000 players nationwide to be nominated for the all-star game, which will be played at Notre Dame on March 30.
“I was surprised when coach Fuller told me,” Johnson said. “I was happy, though.”
Johnson scored seven of her points in a first quarter that saw Warren Central hit its first five shots and break out to a 28-14 lead at the end of the first quarter.
The Lady Vikes increased the lead to 50-21 at halftime, shooting a gaudy 63 percent from the field.
“We wanted to step it up tonight with a big win,” said senior Saleda Montgomery, who had five steals to go along with her 16 points. “It was senior night and we wanted to play well.”
Montgomery scored 12 of her points in the first half and Latham scored 13 first-half points.
The starters spent the better part of the second half on the bench because of the score, allowing several seldom-used players to get in on the act.
Sophomore Kandra Kilbert scored a career-high seven points and Shantta Taylor scored her first career varsity basket. Senior Brittany Banks scored eight, while fellow seniors Kristin Linson and Ashley Vinzant each scored five.
Warren Central led 70-30 at the end of the third quarter before Magee scored 24 in the fourth to get the deficit down to 33.
Janie Floyd scored 22 points, grabbed 11 rebounds and blocked six shots for Magee.
