The St. Aloysius Flashes tasted victory for the first time this season Friday night in convincing fashion.
Alex Halinski rushed for 176 yards on 15 carries and scored three touchdowns as the Flashes (1-4, 1-2 Region 7-1A) defeated South Leake, 35-0.
South Leake fell to 1-3 on the season.
“Winning a game is what we needed most of all, and of course there is always room for improvement,” St. Aloysius coach Jim Taylor said.
The Flashes started out the game with an interception by Chris Baer and one drive later scored a touchdown on an 11-yard run by Halinski.
The Wildcats fumbled on the kickoff and Chris Lewis recovered on the South Leake 20-yard line. On the next play, Halinski burst through the line for a 20-yard touchdown, his second of the night for a 13-0 lead.
The Wildcats fumbled again and Lambert Culley recovered late in the first quarter.
Bray Jones added a 2-yard touchdown run as the Flashes took a 19-0 lead into halftime.
“The defense played real well, I don’t know what the yardage was that we gave up, but we moved the ball really well and came up with some big plays,” Taylor said.
St. Al did not score again until the fourth quarter. On fourth-and-one on the 1-yard line, Halinski put the ball into the end zone for his third touchdown and a 26-0 lead.
The tenacious Flashes’ defense pushed the Wildcats back to their 15-yard line. On fourth and 15, a bad snap by the Wildcats went into the end zone for a safety putting the Flashes up 28-0.
The final tally came when freshman John David Hosemann scored on a 35-yard run to give the Flashes a 35-0 lead and the victory.
St. Al gained 312 yards of total offense, led by Halinski’s running.
St. Aloysius is scheduled to travel to Noxapater on Friday night .
