Results of Tuesday’s municipal election have been certified and accepted by the city.
The Vicksburg Board of Mayor and Aldermen voted Friday to accept the returns as part of the city’s official record. The results were certified by the municipal election commission Thursday.
Those results show incumbents Mayor Laurence Leyens and South Ward Alderman Sid Beauman winning second terms and North Ward Alderman-elect Michael Mayfield winning his first term on the city board.
At Friday’s board meeting, Leyens thanked the community and said he plans to work to bridge the gap with those who supported other candidates. He also said he plans to be “friendlier” in the next term.
“I’m going to ask people how they’re doing and kiss more babies,” Leyens joked.
The swearing-in ceremony for the city’s elected officers will be at 5:30 p.m. July 1 at City Auditorium. Their four-year terms will begin on July 4 with their first meeting as a board on July 5.
One of the first actions required of a new administration is appointing the city’s officers. Those positions are police chief, fire chief, city attorney, municipal judge and city clerk.
Appointments require only a majority vote of the three-member board and indications from the two incumbents are that they will support all current city officers.
