The prep baseball and softball playoff pictures will get much clearer after tonight.
The second-place team in Division 6-5A baseball, either Warren Central or Vicksburg, is guaranteed a trip to defending Class 5A state champion Oak Grove. The winner, though, will have nearly as tough a task.
Hattiesburg and Picayune are scheduled to meet twice this week. If Picayune wins once, the Maroon Tide will travel to either WC or VHS. If Hattiesburg wins both, the Tigers will travel to Vicksburg. Hattiesburg won Tuesday night’s matchup, 14-2, and the team’s are scheduled to play again on Friday.
The first round is scheduled to start on April 21, with Game 2 the day after and Game 3, if necessary, on Saturday, April 24.
St. Aloysius has secured the second-place spot in Division 7-1A and will host the third-place team from Division 8. The Flashes defeated Crystal Springs 17-1 on Tuesday.
Porters Chapel’s baseball team has already clinched its district championship and will play two more games before opening the playoffs on Tuesday at home.
The Eagles are scheduled to play Veritas on Thursday at Smith-Wills Stadium in Jackson. With a win, PCA will run its record over district opponents to 52-1 over the last five years.
In the playoffs, PCA (17-4) will likely meet either West Memphis, Lee or DeSoto – all Arkansas teams – first.
On the softball diamond, Vicksburg High will travel to defending Class 5A state champion Oak Grove on Saturday in a best-of-three series. The Lady Warriors are ranked No. 1.
WC will host Picayune on Saturday at 1 p.m. A second game will follow. If a deciding third game is needed, it would be played on Tuesday at Picayune
For the St. Aloysius Lady Flashes, it will take until Friday, if there is no more rain, to figure out the playoff scenarios.
St. Al coach Gene Rogillio said Tuesday that his team must win all three of its games this week to even consider the playoffs.
The Lady Flashes took a 7-4 division record into Tuesday night’s game at St. Andrew’s. They were to face West Lincoln this afternoon at Bazinsky Field. The regular season ends Thursday with a trip to Bogue Chitto.
“We lost two but we also won two, so we’re right where we started last week. We lost to Salem 7-1 and West Lincoln 1-0 and that gives us four losses,” the coach said. “I know that if we lose any one of the next three, we’re out. Salem, Loyd Star, West Lincoln and us make up the top four out of the eight teams.”
