Vicksburg High coach Jamie Creel wasn’t happy with the way his team hit the baseball on Saturday, nor the lack of killer instinct they’ve shown lately.
After putting two more wins under their belt, however, and ripping off a five-game winning streak, it’s hard to be too upset.
Avery Mathes struck out 11 in a complete-game two-hitter, and Tyler Wells had an RBI double as Vicksburg beat Murrah 5-1 Saturday at Bazinsky Field.
It was the Gators’ second win of the day. They beat Florence 11-3 earlier in the afternoon.
“We still need to work on our approach at the plate. It’s not very good right now. Of all 18 hitters we sent up there during the game, none did a very good job of hitting,” said Creel, whose team had 15 hits in the two games, including six against Murrah.
The Gators (9-2) did all of their scoring against Murrah (3-3) in the first four innings.
Steven Price led off the first with a walk and scored on an error, then drove in a run with an RBI groundout in the second. Wells’ RBI double in the third made it 4-1, and Heath Daigre scored his second run of the game on a wild pitch to stretch the lead to 5-1 in the fourth.
Creel replaced most of his starters the next time through the lineup, and Mathes took care of the rest.
The junior left-hander retired 14 of the last 16 batters he faced. After Zach Buege’s RBI single in the third inning brought in Murrah’s only run of the game, Mathes didn’t allow another hit. He walked one Mustang and another reached on an error in the seventh inning, but neither advanced past second base.
“I wasn’t feeling really good today, but I just got in there and got focused and threw a few strikes,” said Mathes, who walked two and struck out at least one batter in every inning. “After the first two innings, I started pumping it.”

Tyler Wells and Gerald Mims both homered during a seven-run second inning that propelled Vicksburg past Florence.
Steven Price went 2-for-3 with a double, triple and two runs scored, and Jordan Henry had three RBIs for Vicksburg. Henry’s two-run single in the second set up the two-run homer by Wells, and Mims hit a solo shot two batters later as the Gators jumped ahead 8-0.
Adam Byrd drove in two runs for Florence, and Doug May doubled and knocked in a run.
