James S. Callender Sr.

James S. Callender Sr. died Saturday, Sept. 3, 2005, at his son’s home. He was 66.

Mr. Callender was a native of Natchez. He had been a resident of Vicksburg since 1964. He retired from Horizon Casino as a dealer. He worked as a maintenance supervisor for Bungee and LeTourneau.

He was a member of Redbone United Methodist Church.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Buren O. Callender Sr. and Lillian E. Wallace Callender; and four brothers, Buren O. Callender Jr., Edward Glen Wallace, Howard Wayne Wallace and Billy Ray Wallace.

Survivors include his wife, Patricia R. Callender of Vicksburg; two daughters, Lisa Darlene Moore of Pearl, Ill., and Livia Suzanne Callender of Vicksburg; one son, James S. “Jimmy” Callender of Vicksburg; three brothers, C.D. Laird and Robert Coley, both of Vicksburg, and Malcolm Ray Callender of Jackson, La.; five sisters, B.B. Twiner and Judy Lynn Jones, both of Hazlehurst, Frances Gonzales of Houston, Betty Joyce Malone of Wesson and Hazel Ann Callender of Jackson; and five grandchildren.

Services were at 10 a.m. today at Fisher Funeral Home chapel with the Rev. Clare Biedenharn officiating. Burial will follow at Green Acres Memorial Park.

Pallbearers were Victor Hoofman, Scott Hoofman, Chris Laird, Andy Green, Todd Myers, Dustin Longmire, Cody Longmire, Roy McGraw and Brett Longmire.

Honorary pallbearers were Monette Vines, George Vines, Reece Vines, Russell Vines, Lee Roberts, Randy Hoofman, Ronnie Longmire and John Lee Dover.

Monty L. Dement

Monty L. Dement died Tuesday, Sept. 6, 2005, at River Region Medical Center. He was 42.

A native of Vicksburg, Mr. Dement graduated from Warren Central High School where he was affiliated with the soccer team for a number of years. He was a warehouse clerk for LeTourneau.

He was a member of Immanuel Baptist Church.

He was preceded in death by his father, Cecil H. Dement.

Survivors include his wife, Gaye Dement of Vicksburg; two sons, Austin Taylor Dement and Dylan Alexander Dement, both of Vicksburg; his mother, Shirley Rust of Vicksburg; four brothers, Mark Dement, Marty Dement, Matthew Dement and Pat Lee Parker, all of Vicksburg; and a sister, Karen Stephens of Colorado.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Thursday at Fisher Funeral Home with the Rev. Tony A. Monk officiating. Burial will follow at Green Acres Memorial Park.

Visitation will be from 6 until 8 tonight at the funeral home.

Pallbearers will be Alan Ryan, Cecil Dorrell, Ronnie Burris, Johnny Burris, Robert McDaniel, Cliff Whitam and Mike Tart.

Honorary pallbearers will be William E. Smallwood, Bobby Purvis, George Solis, John Dolan, George Boone and Barry Robinson.

Jack H. Dildine

Jack H. Dildine died Monday, Sept. 5, 2005, at University Medical Center in Jackson. He was 70.

Born in Vicksburg, Mr. Dildine was a veteran of the Navy in the Korean War. He was a retired veteran of the Air Force, serving in Vietnam.

He graduated from Culkin Academy and received a master’s degree from Mississippi College. He retired from Waterways Experiment Station as an environmental protection specialist.

He is survived by his wife, Judy Mathews Dildine of Vicksburg; two sons, Branch Dildine of Birmingham, Ala., and Walter Dildine of Wellington, Fla.; two daughters, Martha Smith of Belzoni and Tamara Dildine of Yazoo City; eight grandchildren; and a number of great-grandchildren.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Thursday at Green Acres Memorial Park with the Rev. James Mathews II officiating. Burial will follow under the direction of Glenwood Funeral Home.

Visitation will be at the funeral home Thursday from 1 p.m. until the service.

Wilma Arlin Adams McHan

Wilma Arlin Adams McHan died Sunday, Sept. 4, 2005, at River Region West Campus. She was 81.

Born in Choctaw County, Mrs. McHan had lived in Vicksburg since 1963. She was the daughter of the late James Claude Adams and Mary Stafford Adams.

She was a retired beautician and member of Calvary Baptist Church.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, C.B. McHan, and three brothers.

Survivors include three sons, John McHan and Kenny McHan, both of Vicksburg, and Randy McHan of Stringer; and seven grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at Green Acres Memorial Park with Randy McHan officiating. Burial will follow under the direction of Riles Funeral Home.

George Moore

George “Bob” Moore died Sunday, Sept. 4, 2005, at Veterans Administration Medical Center in Jackson. He was 77.

Mr. Moore was a native of Fort Towson, Okla., and had lived in Vicksburg for 14 years. He worked as a service man for the Oil Fields for 45 years. He attended Southside Baptist Church.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Bennie Vernon and Fannie Polston Moore; four brothers; four sisters; and a grandchild, Jermey Moore.

Survivors include his wife, Barbara Henley Moore of Bovina; one son, Bobby Moore of Bovina; two daughters, Debra Fahlstrom and Euna Moore, both of Bovina; one sister, Juanita Brooks of Paris, Texas; six grandchildren; and other relatives and friends including the Thompson family.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Thursday at Edwards Cemetery with the Rev. Greg Clemts officiating. Visitation will be from 5 until 7 this evening at Fisher Funeral Home.

Pallbearers will be Jimmy Thompson, Bubba Thompson, Tommy Thompson, Bill Thompson, Danny Fahlstrom, David Hamilton and T.J. McDuff.

Bernice Ashley Ross Rapp

KENTON, Ohio – Bernice Ashley Ross Rapp died Monday, Sept. 5, 2005, at her home in Kenton, Ohio. She was 80.

Mrs. Rapp was born in Franklin Parish.

With her husband, she published Mountain Music national hunting magazine. She participated in the Kenton National Coon Dog Trials. She was a member of Mount Victory United Methodist Church.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Carl and Addie Cook Ashley; three sisters; two brothers; and a husband, Eddie Ross.

She is survived by her husband, Edwin Rapp of Kenton; a son, James Ross of Kenton; two sisters, Alma Hood and Iris Carter, both of Doyline, La.; two brothers, Gene Ashley of Huntsville, Ala., and Buele Ashley of New Caney, Texas; and two granddaughters.

Services will be at 1 p.m. Saturday at Crowville Masonic Cemetery. Burial will follow under the direction of Cox Funeral Home of Delhi.

Memorials may be made to the Hurricane Katrina Relief Fund or a favorite charity.

James Smith

James “Jimmie” Smith died Tuesday, Aug. 30, 2005, at Bolivar County Hospital in Cleveland. He was 81.

A native of Fayette, Mr. Smith attended Jefferson County Schools. He served in the Army in World War II. He was of the Baptist faith.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Calvin Smith Sr. and Mary Tyler Smith; a sister, Lena Mae Smith; and three brothers, Richard Smith, Alex Smith and Peter Smith.

Survivors include four brothers, Jessie “7-Up” Smith and Robert Hall, both of Vicksburg, Calvin “Roy” Smith Jr. of Chicago and George Smith of Denver, Colo.; and nieces, nephews, cousins and other relatives including members of the Banks, Tyler and Woods families of Fayette and Vicksburg.

Evenell Sullivan

TALLULAH – Evenell Sullivan died Monday, Sept. 5, 2005, at Madison Parish Hospital in Tallulah. She was 73.

Mrs. Sullivan was born in Lepanto, Ark., and had lived in East Carroll Parish most of her life. A housewife, she was a member of the United Pentecostal Church of Oak Grove.

She was preceded in death by a daughter, Sheila Ann Sullivan.

She is survived by six sons, David Charles Sullivan and Jimmy D. Sullivan, both of Forest, La., Alvin O. Sullivan Jr. of Transylvania, La., Daniel B. Sullivan of Alsatia, La., Jerrel D. Sullivan Sr. of Delhi and Johnny P. Sullivan of Oak Grove; two daughters, Frances A. Gayle and Connie J. Gayle, both of Tallulah; two brothers, Andy Carter Jr. of Tallulah and William F. Carter of Oak Grove; three sisters, Patricia Stanley and Cammie Martinez, both of Oak Grove, and Neva J. Matthews of Lake Providence; and 21 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Thursday at Crothers-Glenwood Funeral Home in Tallulah with the Revs. Bill Bearden and Keith Riley officiating. Burial will follow at Memorial Park Cemetery in Lake Providence.

Visitation will be from 5 until 8 tonight at the funeral home.

Grandsons will serve as pallbearers.

Ivan A. Wixon

PASCAGOULA – Ivan A. “Tiny” Wixon died Saturday, Aug. 27, 2005, at Singing River Hospital in Pascagoula. He was 82.

Mr. Wixon was a graduate of Culkin Academy in Vicksburg. He was self-employed before retiring from Ingalls Shipbuilding.

He was a member of Arlington Heights Baptist Church in Pascagoula.

He was preceded in death by his parents, George Ivan Wixon and Rena Mae Wixon; four brothers, Kelly Wixon, Thomas Wixon, Larry Wixon and Clifton Wixon; and one sister, Aleen White.

Survivors include his wife, Joy Wixon of Pascagoula; two sons, Mike Wixon of Pascagoula and Steve Wixon of Greenville, S.C.; one daughter, Joy Lynn Gable Nunez of Pascagoula; one brother, Bobby Wixon of Shreveport; eight grandchildren; and other relatives including Joyce “Sissy” Morris and Elsie Wixon.

Services were at 3 p.m. Tuesday at Machpelah Cemetery under the direction of O’Bryant-O’Keefe Funeral Home in Pascagoula with the Rev. Ben Carlisle officiating.
