As postseason honors start rolling in, Warren County athletes are making their presence known.
Meridian Community College catcher Katie Barnett earned all-tournament first-team honors at the 2005 National Junior College Athletic Association national tournament at Phoenix College.
The former Warren Central standout catcher led Meridian to the Region 23 championship and the semifinals of the national tournament.
Courtney Angel, a former Porters Chapel Academy standout now playing for Copiah-Lincoln Community College, earned all-Region 23 honors.
Angel, an all-Region 23 selection in her freshman year as well, was hurt much of the year with a torn ligament in her knee. She appeared in 20 games for the Lady Wolves and hit .481 with a home run and five doubles.
Ole Miss slugger Brian Pettway, the leading hitter in the Southeastern Conference and winner of the second annual Boo Ferriss Trophy as the best college baseball player in the state, earned first-team All-SEC honors.
The Warren Central product is hitting .400 as the Rebels prepare for tonight’s SEC Tournament opener against Alabama.
Pettway has played third base, first base and pitcher this season before finding a home in right field.
“He’s one of the best outfielders we’ve had here, at least in my five years,” Ole Miss coach Mike Bianco said. “He’s not the fastest, but he gets great jumps on the ball and has a tremendous arm.”
Craig Newton, another WC product and star catcher for Delta State, was tapped as first-team all-South Central Region.
Newton, a finalist for the Ferriss Trophy, leads the team with 15 home runs and 75 RBIs. He is also hitting .360.
Delta State will open its defense of the Division II World Series on Saturday against Chico State of California.
