One Vicksburg woman was killed and another was injured Friday when their car left the northbound lanes of U.S. 61 North and overturned.
Crystal Merritt, 21, 3355 U.S. 80, was driving a Toyota Corolla north on U.S. 61 North near the intersection with North Washington Street about 5:13 p.m. when it left the road to the right and then, in an overcorrection, crossed the median to the left, Officer Ken Smith of the Vicksburg Police Department said. In crossing the median the car hit a concrete culvert, causing it to overturn, eject Merritt and roll over her, Smith said.
Both Merritt and the car’s passenger, her sister-in-law, Stephanie Merritt, 22, 200 Marilyn Drive, were taken to River Region Medical Center.
Crystal Merritt was pronounced dead at the hospital of massive injuries to her body and head, Deputy Warren County Coroner Larry Chisley said.
Stephanie Merritt was in stable condition in the emergency room, the hospital nursing supervisor said.
Family and friends of Merritt’s were gathered outside the hospital’s emergency room.
Jennifer Sheller said Merritt was her best friend and that the two attended Warren Central High School together.
”She was a great person,“ Sheller said of Merritt. ”Just bubbly – always smiling, outgoing.“
Friends said Merritt’s survivors include a 3-year-old son, Will; her parents, Bill and Tammy Merritt; three brothers, Karl Merritt, Shane Merritt and Joe Merritt; and three sisters, Kerri Barnes, Brittany Merritt and Amy Merritt.
Neither of the Toyota’s occupants was wearing a seat belt, Smith said.
Glenwood Funeral Home has charge of arrangements.
The fatality was the 10th this year from Warren County wrecks.
