James C. Amos
FARMERVILLE, La. – James C. Amos died Wednesday, Feb. 2, 2005, in Farmerville, La. He was 74.
Mr. Amos was born in Crowville, La. He served in the Army for 23 years, serving in the Korean War twice and in the Vietnam War. He retired as a sergeant.
He was preceded in death by his father, Marion C. Amos; his mother and stepfather, Susie and R.L. Dunham; two brothers, Earl Amos and Billy Mack Amos; a sister, Louise Ryals; and a stepson, Walter Chriceol.
Survivors include two sons, Jim Amos of Houston, Texas, and Robert Amos of Mooringsport, La.; two daughters, Karen Daniel of Vicksburg and Michelle Skains of Farmerville; one stepdaughter, Sherri Griffith of Shreveport, La.; a sister, Catherine Nowlin of Monroe; a brother, Bobby Dunham of Cheyenne, Wyo.; seven grandchildren; nieces and nephews; and other relatives and friends, including Martha Amos.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Friday at Farrar Funeral Home in Farmerville with the Rev. David Martin officiating.
Visitation will be from 5 until 8 tonight at the funeral home.
Ruby Lee Jackson Bass
Services for Ruby Lee Jackson Bass will be at 11 a.m. Friday at Mount Pilgrim M.B. Church with the Rev. Louis A. Hall Sr. officiating. Burial will follow at Cedar Hill Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 5 until 7 tonight at W.H. Jefferson Funeral Home.
Mrs. Bass died Thursday, Jan. 27, 2005, at River Region Medical Center. She was 93.
A homemaker, Mrs. Bass was a member of Mount Pilgrim M.B. Church at Freetown, where she had served on the Mother Board for more than 40 years.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Sylvester Bass Jr.; a son, Sylvester Bass III; a daughter, Annie Bass Amos; a granddaughter, Marsha Bass McKelphin; and her parents, Jessie and Martha Jackson.
She is survived by a son, George Bass of Vicksburg; three daughters, Martha Warrick of New Orleans and Evelyn Bass and Bobbie Bass, both of Vicksburg; eight grandchildren, Winfred Warrick, Armond Bass, Ruby Mercadel, Larry Bass, Michael Bass, Robert Earl Bass, Tony Bass Sr. and Carla Fields; five great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.
Shirley Barnes Chatman
BOLTON – Services for Shirley Barnes Chatman will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at Mount Zion Church of God in Christ on William Lake Road in Bolton. Bolton Funeral Home has charge of arrangements.
Mrs. Chatman died Saturday, Jan. 29, 2005, at Central Mississippi Medical Center in Jackson. She was 76.
Formerly of Vicksburg, Mrs. Chatman was a resident of Bolton.
She was preceded in death by one son, Pierre Davis; her parents, William and Mamie Barnes; two sisters, Narrie Barnes and Mary Henderson; and two brothers, William Barnes Jr. and Albert Barnes Sr.
She is survived by a daughter, Lolita Morales of South Carolina; a son, Alfred Davis Jr. of Bolton; four grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; nieces and nephews, including Linda Barnes Wright of Vicksburg; and cousins and other relatives.
Edward R. Cox Jr.
Edward R. Cox Jr. died Wednesday, Feb. 2, 2005, at the University of Mississippi Medical Center in Jackson. He was 77.
Born in Mobile, Ala., Mr. Cox had been a Vicksburg resident since 1951. He was the son of the late Edward R. Sr. and Mable Terrell Cox. He graduated from McGill High School in Mobile and attended the University of Southern Mississippi.
He played professional baseball in the Farm League of the Brooklyn Dodgers and scouted for the Baltimore Orioles. He founded Vicksburg Paint and Glass Co. in 1951 and helped found Southern Door and Hardware Co. Inc. He also owned Capital Paint and Glass Co. in Jackson.
Mr. Cox was past president of the Junior Chamber of Commerce and of the Vicksburg Catholic School board. He was former director of the Miss Mississippi Pageant and was a member of the Knights of Columbus Council 898. He was a communicant and charter member of St. Michael Catholic Church.
He was preceded in death by a son, Steven Edward Cox; a brother, James Newton Cox; and a sister, Mary Lillian Cox.
Survivors include his wife, Jeanette G. Cox of Vicksburg; three sons, Jeff Cox of Vicksburg, Christopher A. Cox of Brandon and Perry N. Cox of Madison; two brothers, Patrick H. Cox of Charlotte, N.C., and Ernest J. Cox of Mobile; and eight grandchildren and one great-grandson.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at St. Michael Catholic Church with the Rev. P.J. Curley, pastor, officiating. Burial will follow at Green Acres Memorial Park.
Visitation will be from 5 until 7 p.m. Friday at Riles Funeral Home, followed by a prayer service at 7, and Saturday at the church from 9 a.m. until the service.
Pallbearers will be Christopher Cox Jr., Chad Edward Cox, Eddie Monsour, Alex Shiers, C.L. Hardy Jr. and Lance Boswell.
Honorary pallbearers will be William Thigpen, Jimmy Vessell, A.L. Sullivan, David McBee, John Byram and Joe Grayson.

Annie M. Foster
KANSAS CITY, Mo. – Annie M. Foster died Saturday, Jan. 29, 2005, at Baptist-Lutheran Hospital in Kansas City, Mo. She was 67.
Mrs. Foster was born in Edwards to Howard and Mary Ella Gordon. She was a supervisor for B&G Maintenance for 14 years. She was a former member of Mount Moriah Church of Edwards and attended Metropolitan M.B. Church in Kansas City.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Lee A. Foster; a son, James Henry Foster; a daughter, Belinda Foster; her father, Howard Gordon; one sister, Janette Carter; and three brothers, Andrew Gordon, John Gordon and Augustus Gordon.
Survivors include her mother, Mary Ella Gordon of Edwards; four sons, Samuel Foster, Lee Foster, Aldivon Foster and Patrick Foster; five daughters, Annette Jones, Patricia Foster, Mary Foster, Terrion Foster and LaShawn Foster; a sister, Nancy Collins; grandchildren; and nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and friends.
Services will be at 1 p.m. Saturday at Mount Moriah M.B. Church. Burial will follow at the church cemetery.
Visitation will be from 1 until 5 p.m. Friday at Lakeview Funeral Home in Vicksburg.
D’Zevion Cornelius Lee
D’Zevion Cornelius Lee, infant son of Zack and Kitty Lee of Vicksburg, died Saturday, Jan. 29, 2005, at University of Mississippi Medical Center in Jackson.
He was preceded in death by grandparents, Bernice Lee and Zack Dotson.
In addition to his parents, he is survived by a brother, D’Zachary Williams of Vicksburg; grandparents, Ora Anderson and James and Sherry Smith, all of Vicksburg; and aunts, uncles, cousins and other relatives, including members of the Coleman, Johnson, Foster and Hamberlin families.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Friday at Lakeview Memorial Funeral Home. Burial will follow at Cedar Hill Cemetery.
Atwood Stephen Quirk Jr.
Atwood Stephen Quirk Jr. died Wednesday, Feb. 2, 2005, at River Region Medical Center. He was 70.
Born in Arabi, La., he had been a resident of Vicksburg most of his life. He was the son of the late Atwood Stephen Sr. and Ethel Mary Byrnes Quirk. He attended St. Aloysius High School.
Mr. Quirk retired in 1990 from the Mississippi Department of Transportation as a surveyor with 38 years of service. He was a member of the Catholic faith.
He was predeceased by a brother, Roland Peter Quirk Sr.
He is survived by his wife, Barbara Bliss Quirk of Vicksburg; daughter, Sylvia Q. Brown of Vicksburg; grandson, Alexander Stephen Brown of Ridgeland; two sisters, Ethel Quirk of Pensacola, Fla., and Doris Collins of Monroe, La.; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Friday at Riles Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. James Brown and the Rev. Dural Ragsdale officiating. Burial will be at the Antioch Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 9 a.m. Friday until the service.
Pallbearers will be Mike Robinson, Matthew Coleman, George Schwindling, Albert Schwindling, Roland Peter Quirk Jr., Jamie Ross, Phillip Jones and Jimmy McCaskill.

John W. Stennett Sr.
TALLULAH – John W. Stennett Sr. died Tuesday, Feb. 1, 2005, at Olive Branch Senior Care Center in Tallulah. He was 89.
Born in Pineville, Miss., Mr. Stennett had lived in Tallulah for five years. He was a retired oilfield production foreman.
He is survived by two sons, Leonard Thomas Stennett of Thibodaux, La., and John W. Stennett Jr. of Temple, Texas.
Services were at 10 a.m. today at Crothers-Glenwood Funeral Home with the Rev. John W. Rushing officiating. Burial followed at Silver Cross Cemetery.
Von Lavelle Stewart
WADESBORO, N.C. – Von Lavelle Stewart died Sunday, Jan. 30, 2005, at Carolina Medical Center in Charlotte, N.C. He was 51.
Mr. Stewart was born in Monroe and was a resident of Wadesboro, N.C.
He was preceded in death by his father, Bobby Stewart.
He is survived by three sons, Spencer Stewart and Ronny Stewart, both of West Monroe, and Kevin Stewart of Lake Wylie, S.C.; one daughter, Carla Stewart of West Monroe; his mother and stepfather, Sheron and John “Dub” Hodges of Oak Grove; a brother, Kerry Stewart of Oak Grove; three sisters, Vicki Stewart and Sheree Hines, both of Oak Grove, and Sheryl Thrower of Downsville, La.; and six grandchildren.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Friday at Cox Funeral Home in Oak Grove with the Rev. Jimbo Herring officiating.
Visitation will be until 9 tonight at the funeral home.
Katie Mae Cummings Vernon
Katie Mae “Bluejay” Cummings Vernon died Sunday, Jan. 30, 2005, in Chicago. She was 93.
Mrs. Vernon was a member of Cedar Grove Baptist Church, where she had served as president of the Usher Board. She worked as a cook at both Waterways Experiment Station and the Grange Hall community’s Head Start, which she also helped found.
She was preceded in death by her husband, James Vernon; a daughter, Johnnie Mae Jenkins; 11 siblings; and her parents, Greene and Mariah Cummings.
Survivors include two grandchildren, Larry Maurice Jenkins of Hammond, Ind., and Toni Darden of Hickory Hills, Ill.; six great-grandchildren; 14 great-great-grandchildren; and nieces, nephews and other relatives, including members of the Buck, Braboy, Brown, Funches, Harris and Scott families of Vicksburg.
Williams Funeral Service has charge of arrangements.
Sammie Williams
Sammie Williams died Tuesday, Feb. 1, 2005, at Vicksburg Convalescent Home. He was 85.
Mr. Williams was a custodial worker and veteran of World War II. He was a member of Mount Heroden M.B. Church, where he had served as chairman. He was a member of American Legion Post No. 213.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Sam and Mary M. Williams, and seven brothers, Andrew Williams, Eddie Williams, Alison Williams, Arthur Williams, Ernest Williams, Ardell Williams and John Williams.
He is survived by his wife, Sadie Braxton Williams of Vicksburg; a stepson, Melvin E. Redmond Sr. of Vicksburg; two sisters, Loaner Neely of Vallejo, Calif., and Bernice Crawford of Compton, Calif.; four grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and nieces, nephews, cousins and other relatives.
