During Warren Central’s run to the Class 5A state semifinals a season ago, Amanda Doyle usually came off the bench to provide defensive pressure.
Her quickness and ball-hawking ability made her tough to match up with.
On Saturday, the lone Warren Central senior added some offense to an already strong defensive game.
Doyle scored a game-high 20 points, including five 3-pointers, as the Lady Vikes defeated Vicksburg, 65-55, in a game that was not as close as the final score.
“This is her team, it’s not mine,” said WC coach Donny Fuller, who has led the Lady Vikes to seven straight wins over VHS. “She’s the only senior on the team and we look to her for leadership and a lot of other things.”
Doyle opened the game by hitting a 3-pointer from the corner, then opened the second half with a trey, also from the corner. By the time she hit her 3-pointer in the second half, the Lady Vikes had a 41-18 lead and were well on their way to a blowout.
“I wasn’t thinking (about the 3s),” Doyle said. “I was just trying to go out, play my best and prove to people that we can play.”
Warren Central (7-3) also got 17 points from freshman Sha’Kayla Caples and 13 from fellow freshman Karnina Bunch.
Rachel Jenkins scored 20 points and Kristin Ellis added 11 for Vicksburg, which trailed by as many as 32 points before chopping into the lead in the fourth quarter. Jenkins scored 13 of her points in the fourth quarter.
“They have a good team, but we weren’t doing a lot of the things we were supposed to,” Jenkins said. “We are a lot better than we played, but until we pull together and play like we are supposed to, we will have some rough games.”
Vicksburg missed its first seven shots from the floor and did not hit a field goal until the 1 minute, 26 second mark of the first quarter.
Warren Central led 19-9 at the end of the first quarter and extended the lead to 38-18 at the half.
A third-quarter flurry by Ellis – she scored all 11 of her points in the third – allowed the Missy Gators to get the lead down to 14 in the fourth quarter.
“This wasn’t a complete game for us,” Fuller said. “I thought it was a complete 2 1/2 quarters. We’re up 30 and we win by 10, that’s not a complete game.”
Warren Central scored four straight points to go back up by 18 before Vicksburg ended the game on an 11-1 run.
“We knew we had to come out in the second half and do something if we wanted to get back in the game,” Jenkins said. “We came out ready to play.”
