LAKE – Terrell Ricks ran for 110 yards and two touchdowns on only nine carries, Greg Sanders added a pair of rushing touchdowns, and Lake’s swarming defense held St. Aloysius to 90 yards of offense in a 39-7 rout.

St. Al’s only score came on a 45-yard pass from Chris Baer to Chip Donald early in the fourth quarter. It covered as much ground as the Flashes (0-4, 0-2 Region 7-1A) gained the rest of the game combined.

“We didn’t have many bright spots. I’m positive, and I always like to try and find good things, but we didn’t have a whole lot of things that looked real good tonight,” St. Al coach Jim Taylor said.

The game turned late in the first quarter, when Lake scored 21 points in a span of 2 minutes, 47 seconds.

After the Hornets (2-2, 2-0) were held to one first down on their first two possessions, Ricks took a handoff up the middle and broke several tackles before getting clear of the St. Al defense at the 45-yard line. He outran the last defender for a 67-yard touchdown that put Lake ahead 7-0 with 3:17 to go in the first quarter.

Three plays later, St. Al’s Alex Halinski lost the handle on the football at his own 30-yard line. Lake’s Timmothy Bridges scooped it up and returned it for a touchdown and a 13-0 lead. On St. Al’s next possession, it was Bray Jones who coughed up the football. Jeremy Johnson recovered for Lake at the St. Al 20, and Sanders scored from 5 yards out three plays later. Marcus Pinkston’s two-point conversion pass to Jacobe Burrage made it 21-0 with 30 seconds to go in the period.

“Offensively, we didn’t do much all night long. Defensively, after the first two series and the big play from them, we just quit,” Taylor said. “I love my kids to death, but I was really disappointed in our effort.”

The Flashes managed only three first downs in the first half, none in the second, and didn’t cross midfield until Harris Martin’s 35-yard kickoff return gave them the ball at the Lake 45-yard line. Baer hit Donald for the Flashes’ only touchdown – and their only highlight – on the next play.
