Authorities broke up fights in a crowd of 200 to 300 young people on a Vicksburg parking lot Saturday night, making multiple arrests in the process.

“You’re going to get calls from time to time, but nothing on this scale,” said Lt. Davey Barnette, shift supervisor for the Vicksburg Police Department.

Fourteen city officers and a Warren County deputy brought the group under control.

Three Vicksburg teens and one woman face fighting-related charges after being taken into custody near the exit of Cinema 4 at Pemberton Square mall, Police Capt. Mark Culbertson said.

Five juveniles, ages 13, 14, 15, 15 and 16, were also arrested for violating Vicksburg’s midnight curfew law, Sgt. Jimmy Sweet said. The 13-year-old was the only female arrested for the curfew violation. All were released to their parents or guardians.

The fights broke out after the late movies finished at about 11 p.m. Three females, ages 13, 13 and 15, face charges of disorderly conduct. They were also released to their parents or guardians.

The adult, 18-year-old, Jessica Yvonne Davis, 230 Ironwood Drive, faces a disorderly conduct charge, Sweet said.

“They just wanted to get crunk and fight,” said Shykela Stokes, a 13-year-old who witnessed the fights. “Crunk” is a slang term for unbridled partying.

Mall security guard Antonio Calvin said fights among unsupervised teens are a regular occurrence. “It’s routine,” he said.

Barnette said it was rare to have such a call at this time of the year.

“Back during the summer, it was a different story,” he said. Children on their summer vacation would often spend all day at the mall, Barnette said.

Mall manager Renee Williams couldn’t be reached either Sunday afternoon or this morning.

The mall, owned by CBL and Associates, opened in 1985, and has instituted controls for minors during evening hours. All businesses were closed, however, when police were called Saturday night.
