Two of the three people killed Friday morning in a six-vehicle crash on Interstate 20 were Hinds Community College baseball players.
Less than a week after playing in a tournament honoring a former player who was also killed in a car accident, sophomore pitchers James Andrew Carlisle, 20, of Mc-Kinney, Texas, and Marc Ryan Basye, 20, of Terry, died instantly in a predawn wreck involving two other cars and three 18-wheelers.
Reached late Friday afternoon, Sgt. James Walker of the Mississippi Highway Patrol said heavy fog was being blamed for the accident, but added that an investigation is ongoing.
Truck drivers involved in the crash had reported low visibility, Walker said.
“We are extremely close as a team. It’s just like a family,” said Hinds catcher John Rice Pettway, a sophomore. “This is real hard.”
Last Saturday in Vicksburg, Carlisle earned a victory during the Wes Cliburn Classic, named for player Wes Cliburn who died in a 1998 car accident. The ace of the Hinds Eagles’ pitching staff, Carlisle led the team with a 2-1 record.
Basye had been a starting pitcher since his sophomore year at Hillcrest Christian School in Jackson. He had played for the private school since eighth grade, head baseball coach Shane Kelly said.
“Marc was a good kid who kept the morale of the team up,” said Kelly, whose team has been playing in the Jackson Prep baseball tournament this week. “He was always joking around, and everyone seemed to like him.”
Due to an arm injury, Basye had not pitched a game this season at Hinds.
“They were both good guys, I’ll tell ya,” Pettway said. “They both contributed a lot to this team.”
The Eagles were to play two games Friday in Raymond and two today at Itawamba Community College, but those were canceled.
One other person died in Friday’s crash, called in to emergency dispatchers at 1:59 a.m.
Christine Jones, 54, 2252 Castle Hill Drive, Jackson, died instantly, authorites said.
Five people were injured in the wreck. Of those, Richard Burrell, 51, 3802 Edwards Ave., Jackson, was the only one who remained hospitalized Friday evening. A spokesman at University Medical Center listed him in good condition.
The four other injured were taken to River Region Medical Center, where they were treated and released, a hospital spokesman said Friday evening. They were:
