Porters Chapel finds building a program a tough proposition|[11/18/06]

When a program’s success is measured in goals scored, rather than wins and losses, it’s hard to classify it as a rebuilding project.
So, first-year Porters Chapel Academy soccer coach Chad Hoeppel isn’t calling it that. He’s simply trying to build a program, maybe even two.
“We call it rebuilding, but we’re not rebuilding. We’re trying to build,” Hoeppel said. “The ultimate goal a few years down the road is to have a separate guys and girls team. That’ll make it easier to compete.”
PCA fields a co-ed team that has more girls than boys. Playing against teams comprised of nothing but boys has been a big factor in its lack of success so far. And with a few more years, at least, of co-ed teams still on the horizon, things won’t improve much any time soon.
“It’s difficult,” Hoeppel said. “We have some talented girls and some talented guys, but it’s still hard to compete just because of the physical nature of it.”
Still, Hoeppel holds out hope. There are several young players on the roster such as 7th-graders Dewayne Russell and Cody Flanagan who may develop into decent players with time and practice. And senior Ashley Johnson is a good all-around athlete who may be the team’s best player.
At this stage, however, Hoeppel’s goal is to find some building blocks and go from there.
“We’re hoping to build up some skills with the ones we have. I think you have to have patience, especially with this new of a program. And we still have a lot of kids who either haven’t played before or just played a little,” Hoeppel said. “The goal is to look five years down the road and have some young ones come up playing together.”
Hoeppel added that while the program is finding its feet, it wouldn’t hurt to win a game or two. PCA didn’t win last year, and has scored only four goals total in the last two seasons.
“I’m not looking to go undefeated. But I think we have the potential to get two or three wins behind us and keep games close,” he said. “I don’t see us getting blown out in any games.”
