Governor’s Cup swings into final weekend|[8/4/06]

Vicksburg’s annual baseball blowout hits its homestretch this weekend.

The summer-ending Governor’s Cup tournament wraps up its run at Halls Ferry Park with more than 100 games on eight fields beginning tonight at 6.

A total of 56 teams spread across five age groups will descend on Vicksburg this weekend, making it the largest single weekend in the 14-year history of the tournament. Another 30 teams played in five age groups last weekend.

Other brackets playing this weekend include the 7-, 14- and 15-16-year-olds. Local teams in the 7-year-olds’ bracket include the Vicksburg Stars, Vicksburg Bandits and Vicksburg River Rats. The Stars and Bandits meet in the opening game tonight at 6 at the Bazinsky Park softball fields.

The Vicksburg Gators and Culkin all-stars will participate in the 10-year-olds’ division, while the Culkin Rebels, Vicksburg All-Stars and Vicksburg Angels will all vie for the 12-year-olds’ crown.

The Vicksburg Hurricanes (14-year-olds) and Vicksburg Heat (15-16-year-olds) round out the local lineup.
