Cole Smith got his record Friday night at Porters Chapel Academy, but kicker Michael Busby will have to wait.
Smith, the Eagles’ senior receiver, caught a 5-yard touchdown pass from Hayden Hales in the first quarter, giving him the Warren County record for touchdown receptions in a career with 19. He broke former Culkin standout Tommy Akin’s mark of 18 career touchdown catches.
Busby, meanwhile, tried to get the county record for longest field goal at 60 yards, but the kick was short and wide. He later had an attempt from 52 for the PCA school record, but again it was wide.
PCA coach Randy Wright was able to let Busby go for the record books because the game was well in hand with the Eagles up 37-0. They went on to post a 44-6 win over Prairie View Academy.
Smith said he was relieved to get the record out of the way. He also helped out the defense, returning an interception 19 yards for one of PCA’s two defensive touchdowns.
“Oh yeah, I was glad we were able to go for it early in the game. It made things a lot less tense for me,” Smith said.
The 5-yarder to Smith was one of just three completions by Hales in the game.
The senior quarterback struggled with his timing, but did come back to hit Busby with a 37-yard touchdown pass with 3:43 left in the first half to make it 37-0.
“Hayden’s elbow is still sore, but he was able to throw two touchdown passes,” Wright said. “I was glad we were able to take care of Cole’s record early and that was a great thing for him. We tried to let Michael take a shot at the field goal record, but it went wide right.”
“Everything was fine with the snap, it just didn’t go straight,” Busby said of his first kick that occured early in the third quarter following a Prairie View turnover.
“The second kick I didn’t hit that solid,” added Busby, who was 6-for-6 on extra point kicks and sent every one of his kickoffs into the end zone.
Prairie View (3-7, 1-4) outgained PCA in total offense 151-93, and got its touchdown on the final play of the game.
The Eagles (7-3, 4-1) made up for the yardage battle by getting a pair of long punt returns, a safety, and a 29-yard fumble return by Patrick McVay with 6:03 left in the game to go up 44-0.
Smith’s TD reception opened the game’s scoring. It was followed by a safety when Prairie View fumbled a snap in its own endzone for a 9-0 lead.
Cody Ferguson’s 20-yard TD run was followed by Smith’s interception return to boost the lead to 23-0. Hales’ hook-up to Busby made it 30-0 and Robbie Simms’ 2-yard run with 56 seconds left in the second quarter, closed out the a 37-point half.
