One bond issue spent, another in the wings.

And now, city officials have said they may seek in the fall a new bond issue for more public works projects.

Leyens has said the money – possibly $5 million – would be for infrastructure improvements and city landscaping along Oak Street’s Garden District, as well as the construction of a recreational facility with softball fields on Fisher Ferry Road.

South Ward Alderman Sid Beauman has said the six proposed adult softball fields could cost about $2 million. The mayor said he would like to revitalize the Oak Street corridor, which has a mixture of antebellum mansions and dilapidated homes.

In 2001, the Mayor and Aldermen approved a $17.5 million bond issue financing package for public works and downtown revitalization.

State law allows cities to establish an urban renewal area and acquire property to sell to developers with defined conditions on how the property will be used. The legislation also allows the city to remove areas defined as slum and blight.
