Potent Vicksburg offense expects test from Gentry.

Delmon Robinson barreled up the hill in front of where Vicksburg High coach Alonzo Stevens sat and claimed he was 100 percent ready.

&#8220I’m ready. I’m ready,” Robinson repeated before preparing for the Gators’ second-to-last practice before the annual Red Carpet Bowl.

Now, Stevens hopes, his entire team will share in Robinson’s enthusiasm.

The Gators will begin their march through the football season tonight when they host Indianola-Gentry in the second game of the RCB. Kickoff is scheduled for 30 minutes following the Warren Central-Kirby finish.

&#8220We’re ready to hit somebody other than ourselves,” Stevens said. &#8220I’m anxious to see our guys get out there and execute the things we’ve been working on since South Panola last year.”

The Gators lost to the juggernaut Tigers in the first round of the playoffs a season ago. The Gators return a team filled with explosive offensive weapons.

Junior quarterback Stanton Price will start in the Gators’ shotgun, wide-open offense. Receivers Robinson, John Qualls and Vernon Wolfe, and running back Michael Dulaney will give VHS a multi-faceted offense that should be hard to defend.

&#8220We have so many weapons, it does a lot for your confidence,” Price said.

Price threw for 934 yards and three touchdowns as a sophomore and will face a Gentry team that has plenty of athletic ability, Stevens said.

Phil Short, a veteran coach in the Delta, takes over the Rams from Rickey Taylor, who is now the school’s athletic director.

Gentry lost handily to Warren Central in last year’s Red Carpet Bowl and finished the season 2-8 with wins over Greenwood and Lanier.

Stevens said he hasn’t seen Gentry this summer but is sure that the Rams will be athletic.

&#8220They are gonna come in here and play,” Stevens said. &#8220We know that we have to come out focused ready to play as well.

&#8220They are one of the few teams that we will play that will be bigger than we are. But if we come out and execute and do what we need to do, I think we’ll be all right.”
