It was a historic homecoming for Porters Chapel Academy.

Cole Smith set a school record for career touchdown receptions and Randy Wright tied another school record for victories as the Eagles beat Glenbrook 30-28.

The deciding score came when PCA’s Patrick McVay and Joey Gerache sacked Glenbrook quarterback Jake Byrd in the end zone for a safety with 4:39 to play.

Smith, a senior wide receiver, caught four passes for 154 yards and a touchdown, a 94-yarder in the first quarter that was the 12th in his career. That broke Joseph Ivey’s record of 11, set from 2002-04 and Skeet Huskey (1980-82). The county record is 18, by Culkin’s Tommy Akin from 1955-57.

The touchdown came on the first play of PCA’s second series. Glenbrook (4-2) did not have a safety back deep, and Hayden Hales hit a wide-open Smith streaking down the left sideline. Smith outran one Glenbrook defender for the score and a 7-0 lead.

&#8220They were nowhere close. I don’t know what happened to them,” said Smith, who also intercepted two passes and made a key special teams play that led to the decisive safety. &#8220I was trying to get (the record) at the beginning of the year. I had to work for it and I’m glad I got it.”

The victory was the 24th for Wright in only 2 1/2 seasons at PCA. That tied him with Erwin Baylot, who coached at PCA from 1984-87, for the most in school history.

&#8220That’s something I’ll look at later on,” Wright said. &#8220I didn’t win a single game by myself. I had a lot of help from some great assistant coaches and a lot of great players. I had a lot of good people around me.”

The Eagles (4-2) made Wright sweat out this win.

Hales completed 6 of 10 passes for 209 yards and a touchdown and ran for another score, and Moose Carney ran for two touchdowns as PCA built a 28-14 halftime lead. Carney finished with 122 yards and two TDs on 21 carries.

The offense struggled with penalties in the second half, however – PCA was whistled for 10 penalties in the game, six after halftime – and had four drives end in Glenbrook territory in the final two quarters.

That allowed Byrd to lead Glenbrook’s comeback. The scrambling lefty, operating out of the shotgun for the entire game, threw a 24-yard touchdown to Logan Hollingsworth on the first series of the second half, then completed three passes on another scoring drive spanning the third and fourth quarters.

Isaiah Stanley scored on an 8-yard run and Byrd added the extra point to tie the game at 28 with 11:39 remaining in the game.

&#8220All year long, the second half has been our weak spot,” Smith said.

PCA drove from its 40 to the Glenbrook 20 on its next possession, before a holding call and a false start backed tit up to the 36. After an incompletion, Michael Busby dropped a punt inside the 5-yard line and Smith knocked it backward as it crossed the goal line, pinning Glenbrook at its own 4.

Byrd was stopped for no gain on first down, then dropped back to pass on second down. Gerache and McVay broke through the line and dropped him for a safety, giving the Eagles a 30-28 lead.

Glenbrook got the ball back with 2:29 left and moved the ball to midfield before Byrd launched a deep pass that was picked off by Smith with 47 seconds to go. Byrd finished 13-of-26 passing for 174 yards, with two touchdowns and three interceptions.

&#8220I was expecting a pass, and about the same time somebody else did too. We got there at the same time and I didn’t know what happened,” Gerache said. &#8220It was just a blur until I hit him and I heard cheering.”
