Vicksburg High football coach Alonzo Stevens has completed hiring his staff for the upcoming football season.

&#8220We hired three new coaches this week and that completes our staff,” Stevens said.

Coming on to Stevens’ staff will be Darrell Floyd, Dickie Brooks and Larry Carter. Floyd is from Vicksburg while Brooks is from Jackson.

Floyd will be an assistant on the ninth grade team and will also help coach special teams on the varsity squad.

Brooks will coach the Gators’ defensive backs on the varsity level and will be the defensive coordinator for the junior varsity team.

Carter will be an assistant for the junior high team.

The new hires help replace the departure of defensive coordinator David Tadlock who resigned back in January to pursue other opportunities. Coach Toriano Wells, the Gators’ secondary coach last season, was promoted to the defensive coordinator position.

Practice for the Vicksburg High varsity team will begin Monday at 7:30 a.m. Stevens said it’s still undecided how long the team will participate in two-a-days.

&#8220The problem is that teachers must report for the new school year on Tuesday. We may just go twice on that one day or three days at the most. It’s something we’ll evaluate on Monday evening,” Stevens said.

The Gators will spend four days in shorts before donning the full gear by the end of the week.

Stevens says he expects nearly 85 players to report.

for the opening of fall drills.

&#8220We have a big class of sophomores and juniors. The kids have done a great job getting in their summer work in and we’ve had a lot of kids go camps throughout the summer.

&#8220Vernon (Wolfe) and Delmon (Robinson) are at LSU this week and that’s the last of the summer camps for our guys,” Stevens said.

The team concluded 7-on-7 drills at Millsaps College on July 14, the site of the New Orleans Saints training camp which opens Thursday in Jackson. The Gators went 2-2-1, falling 6-0 to three-time Class 5A champion South Panola and tying Class 5A runner-up Meridian High 0-0.

In other coaching news, Vicksburg High still does not have a girls varsity softball coach. Kori Crutchfield resigned the post to take the head coaching position for women’s soccer at Hinds Community College. Practice for Mississippi public high slow-pitch softball began on Monday.

&#8220We’re not close at all on it because we haven’t had anyone apply for it,” said Vicksburg Warren Athletic Director Lum Wright Jr. &#8220The assistant coach will run the team for now and we’ll see how she does.

&#8220Kori left just 10 days ago, so it’s been hard to find someone at this time.”

St. Aloysius is still looking for a boys and girls varsity basketball coach after the departure of Drew McBrayer. McBrayer, the Vicksburg Post’s 2006 Boys Coach of the Year, has accepted an assistant position at New Hope, his alma mater.
