A strange thing has happened at South Pike the first two weeks of the prep football season – the Eagles have yet to score a point.
The perennial Class 3A power suffered a 7-0 loss to McComb in the opener and a 20-0 setback to Brookhaven a week ago.
“We just looked flat,” South Pike coach Randall Huffman told the McComb Enterprise-Journal after the Brookhaven loss. “We didn’t give any effort. You can’t win like that.”
Warren Central coach Curtis Brewer said the Eagles, despite their first two shutouts, will be ready against WC. They always are, Brewer said.
“I don’t see how they have not scored,” Brewer said. “They have a good offense out of the spread. It’s basically the same offense as Grenada had.
“One thing is for sure, if you play South Pike, you better be ready to play.”
Huffman and the Eagles will renew their rivalry with Warren Central tonight at 7:30. The Vikings are coming off a close 16-10 loss to Grenada in which the Chargers held WC to 8 yards of total offense in the second half.
Getting the Vikings’ offense jumpstarted has been a major emphasis during this week’s practice. WC scored 37 points against an inferior Memphis-Kirby team in the Red Carpet Bowl. But against Grenada, WC scored its lone touchdown on a 65-yard pass from Jakoby Johnson to Quinton Truly.
The Vikings have not beaten the Eagles in their previous three meetings – two in Magnolia and one at WC.
Warren Central received good news early in the week when Vic Tyrone, the team’s leading rusher, was cleared to play after an injury Friday night. Tyrone and halfback Michael Holt have rushed for a combined 269 yards and scored two of the three rushing touchdowns.
Warren Central has attempted only 13 passes through two games, completing four of those for 107 yards and a touchdown.
