Controlling Clinton a daunting task for WC|[10/20/06]

Curtis Brewer is in a coaching conundrum heading into tonight’s matchup with third-ranked Clinton.

Does his defense concentrate on running back Amonte Harper, who has rushed for 1,073 yards and 14 touchdowns?.

Or should the Vikings concentrate on quarterback Wesley Mounger, a lightning-quick signal caller who has amassed nearly 1,400 total yards and 13 touchdowns?.

But then again, by concentrating on one or both of them, fullback Percy Guy can beat you.

All the run talk leaves out a pair of standout wide receivers that are used sparingly in the Arrows’ run-oriented attack.

Any way Brewer slices and dices this matchup, he knows his team better be ready.

&#8220We have to play the best game we have all season to win,” Brewer said. &#8220Clinton is a very, very talented team.”

The Arrows have won five straight after a touchdown loss to Brookhaven early in the season. With wins over Northwest Rankin and Madison Central, the Nos. 2 and 3 teams in Region 2-5A, the Arrows can move closer to a region championship.

For the Vikings, the impetus is on reaching their 22nd straight state playoffs. Warren Central must beat Provine next week and either Clinton or Vicksburg to have a shot at the postseason.

&#8220We are working hard in practice every day,” Brewer said. &#8220We’re trying to find the things we can do with the personnel we have.”

Warren Central has won two of its last three games, but those came against region doormats Greenville and Murrah. Special teams breakdowns by those two and sterling special teams play by WC aided the two blowouts.

Special teams could again play a big role tonight, with the Vikings relying on Mississippi State commitment Eric Richards for kickoffs, punts and field goals. He averages nearly 45 yards per punt and has booted six field goals.

For a chance to win, though, WC will have to have a superior effort from its defense and an offense that does enough to keep the Arrows off the field.

&#8220They have so many weapons,” Brewer said. &#8220They can hurt you in a lot of different ways.”

Clinton may be without standout linebacker Corey Ray after he injured his shoulder.

Warren Central will take aim at Clinton’s defense behind sophomore running back Joel Forbes. He has rushed for 555 yards since becoming the Vikings’ featured back four weeks ago.
