It didn’t take long for the injury bug to bite Warren County’s football teams.

Key players for all four county squads – Vicksburg, Warren Central, St. Aloysius and Porters Chapel – are nursing injuries heading into Friday’s games.

&#8220Some years you go and nothing happens, and others you have a rash of them,” Vicksburg coach Alonzo Stevens said. &#8220The important thing is to get them healthy for down the road.”

For Vicksburg and Warren Central, running back has been a bad place to be.

Vicksburg wingback Delmon Robinson was tackled awkwardly at the end of a third-quarter run against Natchez last week and partially dislocated his kneecap. He was later diagnosed with a bruised knee, and there were no broken bones or torn ligaments.

Robinson did not return in the Gators’ 12-6 loss and will also sit out Friday’s game at Hazlehurst as a precaution.

&#8220He grabbed my ankle and I was trying to spin out of the tackle, and he didn’t let go of my ankle. I felt (the kneecap) go out and back in,” said Robinson, who has a team-high 129 all-purpose yards this season. &#8220I didn’t wear my brace like I was supposed to. I’ll wear it from now on. I don’t want to experience that again.”

VHS was also without the services of starting tailback Michael Dulaney, who ran for 49 yards in the season-opener against Gentry but missed last week’s game with a high ankle sprain. He returned to practice this week, and his status for the game against Hazlehurst is questionable.

&#8220He’s about 85 or 90 percent,” Stevens said. &#8220He might see some action. We’ll see how he’s cutting and moving.”

At Warren Central, the news regarding starting fullback Vic Tyrone is positive. Tyrone suffered a cut on his calf in the Grenda loss on Friday, but WC coach Curtis Brewer said the bruiser will be back Friday night against South Pike.

Tyrone leads the Vikings with 146 yards and one touchdown on 24 carries this season.

At St. Al and PCA, the quarterbacks have been the ones taking a beating.

PCA’s Hayden Hales took a shot at the end of a play in a 29-0 loss to Central Private and suffered a bruised throwing shoulder. He was held out of contact drills during Tuesday’s practice and his status for Friday’s game is uncertain. Even if Hales can’t play quarterback, he is still expected to start at linebacker.

St. Al, meanwhile, is closely monitoring its quarterback, Chris Lewis.

Lewis suffered a leg injury in the second quarter of a 39-21 loss to St. Andrew’s and sat out the last 2 1/2 periods. He returned to practice on Monday, but missed Tuesday’s workout for a doctor’s appointment and will likely be a gametime decision for Friday’s Region 2-1A opener at Thomastown.

&#8220If it’s not something that’s broken, that we might do more damage to, he’ll be able to play,” St. Al coach Jim Taylor said.

St. Al running back Alex Halinski said Lewis was able to get through Monday’s practice, but was clearly hampered by the injury.

&#8220He said he couldn’t cut. He could run, but not at full speed,” Halinski said.

Regan Nosser replaced Lewis against St. Andrew’s and earned praise from Taylor for his handling of the offense. Nosser was 1-for-3 passing for 7 yards, with no touchdowns and one interception. Taylor said the pick wasn’t the result of a bad decision, however.

&#8220He did all right. He did everything we asked him to. He threw a couple of interceptions, but they were on third down and on passes down the field that you don’t mind getting picked off,” Taylor said. &#8220We asked him to hand the ball off, and he did a good job with it.”

If Lewis can’t go on Friday, Nosser will once again be called into service. Unlike last week when he wasn’t expecting to play much, if at all, Nosser is preparing himself for action.

&#8220They hadn’t told me yet, but I’m getting ready for it,” he said. &#8220I know Chris is going to play, though.”
