INDIANOLA – Porters Chapel’s version of the hook-and-ladder play worked to perfection in a key spot in Friday’s 33-6 win over Indianola Academy.

The 54-yard pass from quarterback Hayden Hales to Michael Busby to Spencer Pell sparked the Eagles, turning a close game into an impressive rout of the tradition-rich IA program at historic Legion Field.

&#8220That’s the first time that play worked,” said a smiling Pell of the trick play that turned a 13-6 Eagle lead into a 20-6 advantage following Busby’s kick with 3 minutes, 26 seconds left in the third quarter.

&#8220It’s the first time we’ve executed it,” chimed in a beaming PCA coach Randy Wright. &#8220How about that old bag of tricks. And it came at a real opportune spot for us.”

The score put Indianola (2-3) down two scores and the Colonels had to abandon their power running game which featured two linemen in the backfield to run interference for workhorse back Ryan Lester, who had 107 yards in the first half.

&#8220That was a nice call. They showed their team speed on that play. It was the big difference in the game,” said IA coach Tommy Nester.

Wright also credited the Eagles defense which stopped two Colonel drives deep inside PCA territory in the third quarter.

&#8220The defense was outstanding in stopping those two third quarter drives,” Wright said. &#8220We made some adjustments at the half. We moved more linemen down. This was a great quality road win for us and what a job Hayden Hales did tonight.”

Hales was outstanding, accounting for four touchdowns, two by pass and two by run. He finished with 102 yards rushing and added 118 through the air on 6-of-14 passing.

&#8220Coach told me if their was a hole open, to go get it yourself, plus their middle linebacker was blitzing a lot,” said Hales, who scrambled for gains of 37 and 18 yards to set up a 3-yard second quarter touchdown to give PCA a 13-0 lead with 9:28 left before halftime.

Hales opened the game by hitting 4 of 6 passes for 52 yards, capped by a 13-yard TD pass to Cole Smith.

Indianola unleashed its power game on a 10-play, 80-yard drive in the second quarter. Nester had all 10 carries and all 80 yards, getting the score on a 3-yard run. The kick was wide to leave it at 13-6 with 5:36 left in the second quarter.

PCA (3-2) added a pair of fourth quarter scores to turn it into a rout. Cody Ferguson returned an interception 15 yards for a score. Hales got his second rushing touchdown on a 5-yard run with 2:46 remaining. Busby had both PAT kicks.
