Services for Opal P. Anderson-Smith will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Church of the Holy Trinity, Episcopal, with the Rev. Michael Nation, rector, officiating. Burial will follow at Green Acres Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 5 until 7 tonight at Fisher Funeral Home and from 10 a.m. Wednesday until the service in the Hall of the McInnis Parish House.

Mrs. Anderson-Smith died Friday, May 26, 2006, at her home in Vicksburg. She was 72.

Mrs. Anderson-Smith was a native of Utica. She graduated from Carr Central High School and was the daughter of the late Cecil W. and Virginia Viola &#8220Jennie” Reed Powers.

She retired from Waterways Experiment Station in 1991 as administrative officer in the Coastal Engineering Research Center after working for the Corps of Engineers for 40 years. She was a member of the National Association of Retired Federal Employees, where she served as president, vice president and service officer and held other offices. She was also a member of Church of the Holy Trinity, Episcopal choir and its altar guild.

Mrs. Anderson-Smith was preceded in death by her husband, Bertram Anderson-Smith Jr.

She is survived by two daughters, Susan Anderson-Smith of Tucson, Ariz., and Karen Anderson-Smith of Vicksburg.

Pallbearers will be Alec Womack, Robert Quinn, Dick Ferguson, Rusty Henderson, Clark McNair, Gene Chatham, Charles Calhoun and Dr. James Houston.

Honorary pallbearers will be William Shappley Jr., Steve Wagner, John George, Raymond Henderson, Clifton Reed Jr., Yoshinobu Namihira, Tom Pokrefke, Walter Wylie, Freddie Abraham, Durwood Graham, Gerald Barrett, Jere Andrews, Howard Benson, Mike Jackson, Martin Pace, Dr. Martin Newcomb, Dr. David Wahl, Dr. Robert Whalin and the Steele Magnolias Luncheon Guild.

VALLEY PARK – Elizabeth P. &#8220Betty” Newman died Monday, May 29, 2006, at Promise Specialty Hospital of Vicksburg. She was 81.

Born in Helena, Ark., Mrs. Newman had been a resident of Valley Park since 1945. She was the daughter of the late Willard Petrus and Eddie Davis Petrus.

She had been a member of the Mississippi Homemaker Volunteers since 1946, serving as state president and a member of the national board. She had volunteered for the American Cancer Society since 1958 and held several offices.

Mrs. Newman served as a committee member and chairman of the Region 5 Mental Health Commission for more than 40 years and was a life member of the Associated Country Women of the World. She was former president and had been a member of the Mississippi Official Women’s Club since 1948 and was a member of Valley Park Baptist Church.

She was preceded in death by her husband, C.B. &#8220Buddie” Newman, longtime member and speaker of the Mississippi House of Representatives; a son, C.B. &#8220Buddie” Newman Jr.; and two brothers, Otis Petrus and William Glenn Petrus.

Survivors include a sister, Mary C. &#8220Pat” Petrus Holland of Willow Springs, Mo.; two brothers, Willard Petrus Jr. of Columbia, Mo., and Edward Petrus of West Plains, Mo.; and nieces and nephews.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Thursday at Valley Park Baptist Church with the Rev. Michael Ensign, the Rev. Dennis Salley and Dr. John G. McCall officiating. Burial will be at Cedar Hill Cemetery under the direction of Riles Funeral Home.

Visitation will be from 4 until 6 p.m. Wednesday at the family residence, 4569 U.S. 61 North in Valley Park.

Pallbearers will be Darren Petrus, Bill Petrus, Jim Petrus, Matthew Petrus, James G. Newman, James C. Newman, Horace Newman Jr. and Ryan Newman.

Honorary pallbearers will be Will Green Poindexter, Sonny Meredith, Billy Whitten, Bobby Braxton, Charles Kerr, Clifton Porter, Darryl Braxton, Billy Aden, Merritt Aden, R.E. Coker and Ted Porter.

James Waits.

Services for James Waits will be at noon Wednesday at Williams Funeral Service. Burial will follow at Green Acres Memorial Park.

Visitation will be from 5 until 7 tonight at the funeral home.

Mr. Waits died Wednesday, May 24, 2006, at River Region Medical Center. He was 91.

Mr. Waits was a member of the Salvation Army Church and Paragon Masonic Lodge No. 7. He was retired from the Air Force.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Estella Waits; his parents, Robert Waits and Nellie Hawkins; three sisters, Bobbie Lee Waits, Eva Yeager and Lucy Smith; and a brother, Robert Waites Jr.

Survivors include two sisters, Theresa Sanders of San Matel, Calif., and Magnora Benson of Duncanville, Texas; two brothers, Walter Waites of Duncanville and Horace Waites of Dallas; and nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends, including members of the Clark, Hawkins, Peaches and Smith families.

Born June 4, 1932, he was a retired truck driver of 20 years. Woody passed Wednesday morning at his home under the care of Hospice Patients Care Services after a lengthy illness.

He was preceded in death by his father, Bob Woodall; and his mother, Lucille Marie Deckard Gilbert.

Survivors include his wife, Elizabeth Ann Woodall; companion pets, Butterbean and Pickles; sons, Ernie Woodall, Bobby Woodall and Adam Woodall, all of San Antonio, Texas, and James Richard Brewer of Tallulah; daughters, Sylvia McKeon and Ester Lingren, both of San Antonio, Teresa Jean Gibbs and April Bedgood, both of Tallulah, and Jennifer Berry of West Monroe, La.; sisters, Ruth C. Brantley of Downsville, La., Dorothy Gilbert of Baton Rouge and Peggy Sue Gilbert of Springfield, Mo.; 28 grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and a number of nieces and nephews.
