Sarah Kerut makes her living scoring points in the paint and putting up double-digit rebounding games for the St. Aloysius Lady Flashes.

On Saturday night, she stepped outside and showed there’s more to her game than just crashing the boards.

Kerut hit five 3-pointers, including three in the first quarter, to help St. Al to a big early lead and an easy 67-40 win over Wesson. Kerut finished with 22 points for the Lady Flashes, who improved to 19-1 with the victory.

&#8220I know I made five in one other game, but it’s not usual that I make that many,” Kerut said of her 3-point barrage. &#8220It depends on if I’m on or not.”

Annie Beaugh scored a game-high 26 points for St. Al, and Amy Beaugh added eight points, 10 assists, seven rebounds and four steals. Perry Furr had 15 points for Wesson (9-14), which fell behind early and never recovered.

Kerut hit two 3-pointers during a 9-0 run midway through the first quarter that put the Lady Flashes ahead for good. She added another before the end of the period, and a fourth in the second quarter as St. Al extended the lead to 36-18 at halftime.

The Lady Flashes pushed the lead to as many as 30 points in the second half and were never threatened by the Lady Cobras.

&#8220Talent for talent, I don’t have what they have. We’re real small, we didn’t block out like we should have, we didn’t play as physical as we needed to to stop them, and they have a good team,” Wesson coach Jemmye Ann Helms said. &#8220They’re 18-1 for a reason.”

After a season of solid basketball, maybe St. Aloysius was due for a stinker.

The Flashes (15-5) committed 28 turnovers – 17 of them in the first half – and allowed Wesson to shoot 52 percent for the game in a 20-point loss.

Adrian King led Wesson (9-12) with 20 points, Brandt Hood added 18, Mason Warren had eight points and six assists, and Phil Fortenberry finished with eight points and 10 rebounds.

John Robert Burnett was one of the few bright spots for St. Al. He was a perfect 5-for-5 from the field and finished with a team-high 12 points.

&#8220We didn’t show up tonight. At all. It’s bad when you get embarrassed in your own gym like that,” St. Al coach Drew McBrayer said. &#8220You’ve got to come out and play every night.”

The turnovers took St. Al out of the game early. Wesson was able to build a 35-19 advantage by halftime, and put the game away with a 10-2 run at the start of the fourth quarter.

St. Al trailed 43-29 at the start of the final period, but the run put the Cobras ahead by 22 points 5:30 to play.

Freshman Sha’Kayla Caples scored a game-high 29 points and Warren Central breezed past Ridgeland on Saturday afternoon.

Veronica Miller and Shantta Taylor each scored eight as the Lady Vikes took a 43-19 lead into halftime before substituting liberally in the second half.

WC is scheduled to host Madison Central on Tuesday.
