Tommie Brown

Services for Tommie Brown will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at Church of Christ on Mission 66 with the Rev. Joe Harding officiating. Burial will follow at Cedar Hill Cemetery. Visitation is from 11 a.m. until 6 p.m. Friday at Williams Funeral Service and from 1 p.m. Saturday until the hour of service.

Mr. Brown died Wednesday, Oct. 31, 2007, at his home in Vicksburg. He was 89.

Mr. Brown was minister of The Church of Christ for more than 50 years. A U.S. Army veteran of World War II, he was a retired LeTourneau maintenance technician.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Mary Greene Brown; his parents, Bryant and Mary Brown; and three sisters and five brothers.

Survivors include a son, Cecil L. Brown of Vicksburg; three daughters, Felicia Brown Wolfe of Jackson, and Sharon Brown Judson and Natalie Brown Erves, both of Vicksburg; and three grandchildren.

Carla B. Conner

Services for Carla B. Conner will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at Williams Funeral Service. Burial will follow at Cedar Hill Cemetery. Visitation is from noon until 6 p.m. Friday at the funeral home and from 10 a.m. Saturday until the hour of service.

Mrs. Conner died Friday, Nov. 2, 2007, at River Region. She was 47.

Mrs. Conner was born and reared in Chicago and moved to Vicksburg as an adult.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Leonard Banks and Elizabeth Green Banks; and three sisters, Renee Banks, Fruity Wade and Naomi Jones.

Survivors include her husband, Roosevelt Conner of Vicksburg; two sons, Wydell Banks of Vicksburg and Nathaniel Banks of Chicago; four brothers, Roynell Banks Sr., Lawerence Banks, Leonard Banks Jr. and Lenard Banks, all of Chicago; three sisters, Nakita Banks, Sueise Green and Blanche Green all of Chicago; nine grandchildren; and nieces and nephews.

Shirley Powell Connelly

ANDREWS, S.C. — Services for Shirley Powell Connelly, age 71, were at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 7, 2007, at Holy Trinity Pentecostal Holiness Church in Andrews, S.C., with the Revs. David R. Richardson, Murray W. Powell, and Eddie Knight officiating. Burial followed at Bethel United Methodist Cemetery in Andrews. The family received friends from 6 until 8 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 6, 2007, at Andrews Chapel of Mayer Funeral Home.

Mrs. Powell died Sunday, Nov. 4, 2007, at Georgetown Memorial Hospital in Georgetown, S.C.

Born in Andrews, S.C., Mrs. Connelly was born on January 12, 1936, to the late Dallas Powell and Flossie Ethridge Powell. She was a member of Holy Trinity Pentecostal Holiness Church in Andrews. Mrs. Connelly was the widow of Julius James Connelly.

She is survived by two sons, Phillip Connelly of Vicksburg and Kevin Connelly and his wife, Pam, of Andrews; a daughter, Denise C. Day and her husband, Don, of New Bern, N.C.; a brother, Ronnie Powell and his wife, Kay, of Andrews; three sisters, Bertha P. Brannon and her husband, Frank, of Hardwick, Ga., Gladys P. Cannon of Charlotte, N.C., and Doris P. Marlowe and her husband, Edward, of Pawleys Island, S.C.; seven grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

Tom Hardges

PATTISON — Tom Hardges died Sunday, Nov. 4, 2007, at his home in Pattison. He was 67.

Mr. Hardges was preceded in death by his parents, B.S. Hardges Sr. and Mary Hulbert-Hardges.

He is survived by his wife, Willie Hardges of Vicksburg; five sons, Tom Hardges Jr. of Petal, Sammy Hardges and Henry Hardges, both of Vicksburg, Bobby Hardges of Brooklyn, N.Y., and John Hardges of Jackson; three daughters, Mary Hardges, Helen Hardges and Willie M. Hardges, all of Vicksburg; one brother, Samuel Hardges of Pattison; an adopted daughter, Alice Byther of Pattison; 29 grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at St. Peter M.B. Church in Pattison with the Rev. Troy Smith officiating. Burial will follow at the church cemetery with Thompson Funeral Home of Port Gibson in charge.

Visitation will be from 1 until 6 p.m. Friday at Thompson Funeral Home Chapel and from 1 p.m. until the service Saturday at the church.

Joann J. Lynn

Services for Joann J. Lynn will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at Vicksburg Church of Christ Holiness with the Rev. Michael Pauline officiating. Burial will follow at Cedar Hill Cemetery. Visitation will be from 6 until 7 p.m. Friday at W.H. Jefferson Funeral Home.

Mrs. Lynn died Tuesday, Nov. 6, 2007, at River Region. She was 43.

Born in Denver, Colo., Mrs. Lynn was employed as a certified nursing assistant at Promise Specialty Hospital. She was a member of Church of Christ Holiness.

She was preceded in death by a brother, Carl Jackson; her maternal grandparents, Lillie Mae Woodson and Joe Woodson; and paternal grandparents, Ethel Jackson and Alexander Jackson.

She is survived by a son, Timothy Jackson of Vicksburg; four daughters, Maneka Jackson, Shawndrea Lynn, Melva Lynn and JaLisa Giles, all of Vicksburg; her parents, Lawrence Jackson Sr, and Ruby Woodson Jackson, both of Vicksburg; three brothers, Lawrence Jackson Jr. of Vicksburg, Charles Jackson of Jackson and Bruce Jackson of Tuscaloosa, Ala.; and a sister, Shirley Brown of Vicksburg.

Christine Myles

CHICAGO — Christine Myles died Tuesday, Oct. 30, 2007, at University of Chicago Hospital. She was 62.

Mrs. Myles moved to Chicago after graduating from Addison High School in 1965. She was baptized at Mount Olive M.B. Church.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Thomas and Nathlia Stamps Myles; and a sister, Mae Olar Myles.

She is survived by a daughter, Gretta Myles of Carlisle; a son, Jay McChristian of Chicago; a sister, Emma Brown of Chicago; four brothers, James Myles of Carlisle, Jake Myles and McArthur Myles, both of Marrero, La., and Thomas Myles of Port Gibson; and uncles, nieces, nephews and other relatives.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at Shady Grove Baptist Church in Carlisle with the Rev. Horace McBride officiating. Burial will follow at the church cemetery with Thompson Funeral Home in charge.

Visitation will be from 1 until 6 p.m. Friday at Thompson Funeral Home Chapel and from 10 a.m. until the service Saturday at the church.

Anita Overton

Anita Overton died Wednesday, Nov. 7, 2007, at River Region. She was 88.

Mrs. Overton retired from Warren County Extension Service. She was a member of Greater Mount Zion M.B. Church.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Johnnie Overton; and her parents, A.V. McGlory and Amanda Cosey McGlory.

She is survived by two sons, Anthony Overton of Vicksburg and Hardy Overton of Austin, Texas; a daughter, Barbara J. Overton of Vicksburg; a brother, Alex Williams of Vicksburg; four grandchildren, five great-grandchildren and other relatives and friends.

W.H. Jefferson Funeral Home has charge of arrangements.

John E. Parrette

John E. Parrette died Monday, Nov. 5, 2007, at his home. He was 81.

A native of Copiah County, Mr. Parrette was the son of the late Curtis and Willie Bankston Parrette.

Mr. Parrette retired from the Navy as chief gunner’s mate during World War II and Korean War. He worked as a civil engineer and technician at the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Waterways Experiment Station in Vicksburg.

He is survived by two daughters, Rebecca P. Brasfield of Vicksburg and Rachel Gray of Jackson; three grandchildren and a number of other relatives.

Services will be at noon Friday at Fisher Funeral Home. Visitation will be from 10 a.m. Friday until the hour of service. Burial will follow at Cedar Hill Cemetery.

Pallbearers will be Pat Bonner, Mike Bonner, Dan Bonner, Chuck Brasfield, Jeff Pickel and Jim Robertson.

Helen P. Rhodes

TALLULAH — Services for Helen P. Rhodes were today at Crothers-Glenwood Funeral Home Chapel with the Revs. Don Thornton and John W. Rushing officiating. Burial followed at Legion Cemetery in Newellton. Visitation was from noon until 2 today.

Mrs. Rhodes died Tuesday, Nov. 6, 2007, at Olive Branch Senior Care Center in Tallulah. She was 84.

Born in Newellton, La., Mrs. Rhodes had lived in Tallulah for a number of years. She was a homemaker and member of First Baptist Church of Tallulah.

She is survived by a brother, W.W. Parker of Jena, La.; and nieces, nephews and cousins.

Roy Ross

Roy Ross died Tuesday, Nov. 6, 2007, at River Region. He was 72.

Mr. Ross was born in Jefferson County. A longtime resident of Vicksburg, he graduated from Culkin Academy and retired from Cappaert Manufactured Housing after 44 years of service. He was of the Baptist faith and a member of Buck Horn Hunting Club.

He was preceded in death by his parents, W.A. and Agnes Ross; two brothers, B.H. and W.M. Ross; and three sisters, Lucille Brantley, Beulah Duke and Bell Ashley.

He is survived by his wife, Ester Johnston Ross of Vicksburg; two sons, Roy Dexter Ross of Vicksburg and Sonny Edwards of Edwards; three daughters, Jane Lynn of Orlando, Mae Hardy of Madison and Brenda Giles of Brandon; four sisters, Ruby Hackler of Vicksburg, Gladys Bass of Brandon, Olive Vincent of Irving, Texas, and Barbara Apoka of Lawton, Okla.; 8 grandchildren and 3 great-grandchildren.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Friday at Glenwood Funeral Home with Dr, John G. McCall officiating. Burial will follow at Green Acres Memorial Park. Visitation is from 5 until 8 tonight at the funeral home.

Pallbearers will be Robert and Michael Edwards, Chris Dill, Ty Wilson, Lee Hardy, Dr. Bill Johnston and Josh and Justin Lynn.

Willie Steen Vaughn

Services for Willie Steen Vaughn will be at 1 p.m. Saturday at Kings Empowerment Center with the Rev. Henry Mayfield Sr. officiating. Burial will follow at Cedar Hill Cemetery with Jefferson Funeral Home in charge.

Mrs. Vaughn died Monday, Nov. 5, 2007, at her home in Vicksburg. She was 53.

Born in Warren County, Ms. Vaughn was of the Baptist faith.

She was preceded in death by a daughter, Tawanda Vaughn; her parents, B.J. Calvin and Esther Ruth Vaughn; and a brother, Vernon Calvin Vaughn.

She is survived by two sons, Edward Vaughn and Robert Vaughn, both of Vicksburg; a daughter, Esther Vaughn of Vicksburg; five brothers, Roosevelt Vaughn, Leroy Vaughn, Leonard Vaughn and Issac Vaughn, all of Vicksburg, and O.D. Vaughn of Richmond, Calif.; two sisters, Nina Hardin and Sylvia Colenburg, both of Vicksburg; and 14 grandchildren, nieces and nephews.

Sylvester Watson

ATLANTA — Sylvester Watson died Thursday, Oct. 25, 2007, in Atlanta. He was 51.

Mr. Watson was preceded in death by his parents, Timothy Watson Sr. and Pauline Brandon-Watson; and a brother, Mack Watson.

He is survived by six brothers, David Lee Watson of Jackson, Clinton and Timothy Watson, both of Chicago, Michael Watson of Dallas, Nathaniel Watson of Atlanta and Claude Watson of Tallulah; five sisters, Rose Mary Knight and Delores Brooks, both of Dallas, and Pauline and Yvonne Watson and Moses Lee Piazza, all of Port Gibson; and uncles, aunts, nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at Second Baptist Church in Port Gibson with the Revs. Lawrence Montford and Leon Nelson. Burial will follow at Lorman’s McCay Cemetery with Thompson Funeral Home in charge.

Visitation will be from 1 until 6 p.m. Friday at Thompson Funeral Home Chapel and from 10 a.m. until the service Saturday at the church.

David Williams

Services for David Williams will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at St. James A.M.E. Church with the Rev. Cory Watts officiating. Burial will follow at Cedar Hill Cemetery. Visitation is from noon until 6 p.m. Friday at Lakeview Memorial Funeral Home and from 10 a.m. Saturday until the hour of service at the church.

Mr. Williams died Monday, Nov. 5, 2007, at Promise Specialty Hospital in Vicksburg. He was 72.

Born in Brandon, Mr. Williams was a resident of Warren County.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Garfield and Gertrude Williams; brother, Jeffield Williams; grandmother, Justice Noble.

He is survived by a son, Jerome Spize of Brandon; five brothers, Archie Williams and Luther Williams, both of Phoenix, Ariz., Joe Louis Williams and John Williams, both of Hattiesburg, and Lee T. Dear of Chattanooga, Tenn.; and a sister, Dessiree Martin of Lake Providence; and other relatives.
