Martha Fernstrom
Martha Fernstrom died Saturday, May 12, 2007, at her residence in Vicksburg. She was 82.
A native of Greenfield, Tenn., Miss Fernstrom had been a resident of Vicksburg since 1949. She was the daughter of the late Roland Albert and Letha Swindell Fernstrom.
She was employed by Western Union for 28 years and was owner and operator of The Red Barn Fix It Shop since 1968. She was a member of Highland Baptist Church.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by six brothers, James Albert Fernstrom, Daniel Wilson Fernstrom, John D. Fernstrom, Richard P. Fernstrom, R.A. Fernstrom Jr. and Joe Fernstrom; son, Bernie Young Johnson; and two sisters, Ruby Young Johnson and Mary Walters.
Survivors include a daughter-in-law, Eva Nell Johnson of Vicksburg; a grandson, Travis Y. Johnson of Growtown, Ga.; a granddaughter, Brandy Aileen James of Vicksburg; two sisters, James Alma Russell of Brookhaven and Catherine Little of Byram; and nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Tuesday, May 15, 2007, at Frank J. Fisher Funeral Home Chapel with Brother Scott Reiber, pastor of Westminster Presbyterian Church, officiating. Burial will follow at Green Acres Memorial Park.
Visitation will be from 5 until 7 tonight at the funeral home.
Pallbearers will be Travis Y. Johnson, Greg Mitchell, Daniel R. Johnson, Wayne Mitchell, Jack Bill James and Charles Tatum.
Memorials may be made to a charity of choice.
Annie Jewell Harvey
TALLULAH – Annie Jewell Harvey died Friday, May 11, 2007, at her home in the Montrose community. She was 92.
Mrs. Harvey was born and reared in Philadelphia, Miss. She had lived in Montrose since 1939, operating a farm with her husband. She was a homemaker and former employee of Kaufman’s and Walters Furniture Company.
She was a charter member of Montrose Baptist Church and a member of First Baptist Church of Tallulah.
She was preceded in death by a son, Luther Edwin Harvey; her husband, Luther Luster Harvey; and a sister, Mary Franklin Landers.
She is survived by one son, William Wallace Harvey of Wasilla, Alaska; one daughter, Faye H. Maxwell of Tallulah; 11 grandchildren; and 20 great-grandchildren.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday at First Baptist Church of Tallulah with the Rev. John Rushing officiating. Burial will follow at Silver Cross Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 5 until 7 tonight at Crothers-Glenwood Funeral Home.
Grandsons will serve as pallbearers.
Honorary pallbearers will be Gerald Collins and John Collins.
Jessie B. Robinson
Services for Jessie B. Robinson will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at W.H. Jefferson Funeral Home with the Rev. Larry D. Clark officiating. Burial will follow at Cedar Hill Cemetery.
Mrs. Robinson died Thursday, May 10, 2007, at St. Dominic Hospital in Jackson. She was 76.
A homemaker, Mrs. Robinson was a member of Mount Lebanon Baptist Church on Union Avenue where she served on the mother board.
She is preceded in death by her husband, Levi Robinson Jr.; her parents, Andrew Bell Sr. and Roberta Brown Bell; a brother, Albert Lee Bell; and three sisters, Geralene Bell, Princess Lee Bell and Sadie James.
She is survived by a son, Calvin Robinson of Rosedale; two daughters, Bertha R. Carter of Clinton and Lucille Woods of Vicksburg; five brothers, Freddie Lee Bell of Chicago, Louis Bell, Robert Bell, Otis Bell and Andrew Bell Jr., all of Vicksburg; a sister, Flora Lee Bell of Chicago; 10 grandchildren, 10 great-grandchildren and other relatives including the James and Walker families of Vicksburg.
Mary Lee Shankle
Mary Lee Shankle died Sunday, May 13, 2007, at Heritage House Nursing Home. She was 97.
A native of Rostan, Ark., Mrs. Shankle had lived in Vicksburg for three years. She was the owner and operator of Mary’s Beauty Shop in Arkansas. She was the daughter of the late Thomas Nelson and Maude Young Rowe. She was a member of Highland Baptist Church.
She is survived by a stepson, Gene Shankle and wife, Bennie Jean, of El Dorado, Ark., and a niece, Patricia K. Pettway of Vicksburg; four stepgrandchildren, Billy Shankle and wife, Henryetta, Lennie Shankle and wife, Laura, Randy Shankle and wife, Gerri, and Pam Carr and husband, Keith, all of Arkansas; 11 great-grandchildren and 27 great-great-grandchildren.
Services will be at 1 p.m. Tuesday at Frank J. Fisher Funeral with the Rev. Brian Ivey officiating. Visitation will be from 11 a.m. Tuesday until the hour of service. Burial will follow at Green Acres Memorial Gardens.
Pallbearers will be Billy Shankle, Tim Murphy, Calvin Allen, James “Bubba” Rowland, Wayne Weathersby and Joe O’Quinn.
Memorials may be made to Highland Baptist Church, 3518 Halls Ferry Road.
