Emma Wrenn Billups

CHICAGO – Emma Wrenn Billups died Wednesday, April 18, 2007, in Chicago. She was 60.

Mrs. Billups was born in Bolton and had lived in Chicago for 41 years. She was a member of Light of the Word Church of God and worked for the Chicago Public Schools as a teacher for more than 20 years.

She was preceded in death by her parents, James Johnson and Emma Harris Johnson; and three brothers, John Henderson, Clifton Johnson and Willie Earl Johnson.

Survivors include her husband, Willie Billups; two sons, Tyrone Wrenn of Springfield, Ill., and Erick Billups of Chicago; one brother, Willie Albert Johnson of Chicago; six sisters, Mary Clay and Bobbie Dubose, both of Bolton, Rosie Nichols of Clinton, Helen Barnes of Jackson, Arletha Ross of Vicksburg and Elizabeth Fowler of Chicago; three grandchildren; and aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and friends.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Friday at Brownsville M.B. Church in Bolton with the Rev. Stanley Garner, pastor, officiating. Burial will follow at the church cemetery.

Visitation will be from 1 until 7 p.m. Thursday at Lakeover Memorial Funeral Home in Jackson.

Rex Bullock

MONROE, La. – Funeral services for Mr. Rex Bullock, 84, of Monroe, La., will be at 10 a.m. Thursday, April 26, 2007 in the chapel of Mulhearn Funeral Home, Sterlington Road in Monroe, with Richard Byrd officiating. Graveside services will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday at Memorial Gardens Cemetery in Mooringsport, La.

Mr. Bullock was born July 23, 1922, in Pope County, Ark., one of five children born to Neal and Vivian Perceful Bullock. He was a former Vicksburg resident.

Mr. Bullock was predeceased by all of his siblings and parents. He died April 23, 2007, at home following a brief illness.

As a World War II veteran serving in Europe, Mr. Bullock participated in the invasion of France at Omaha Beach and retired from the military after 35 years of combined active and reserve military service. He was a lifetime member of the Retired Officers Association and a member of the Swartz Church of Christ.

Mr. Bullock is survived by his wife of 35 years, Sue Fedd Bullock; Son, Robert Bullock and wife, Vida, of Little Rock, Ark.; five stepchildren, Tommy McJunkins and wife Patti, and Trent McJunkins and wife Lori, all of Monroe, Tim McJunkins and wife Becky, of Longview, Texas, Sarah McAbee of Hartselle, Ala., and Joni Lindsay and husband Jeff, of Mooringsport; nine grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.

Pallbearers will be his grandsons, Ashton Crawford, Bradley Crawford, Justin Lindsay, Brian Lindsay, Allan McJunkins and John T. McJunkins.

Visitation will be from 5 until 7 tonight at Mulhearn Funeral Home.

Samuel Henry Johnston Jr.

WEST MONROE, La. – Samuel Henry Johnston Jr., formerly of Vicksburg, died Tuesday, April 24, 2007. He was 55.

Mr. Johnston was a retired riverboat pilot and a resident of West Monroe, La.

Kilpatrick Funeral Home in West Monroe has charge of arrangements.

Manuel Williams Sr.

LOS ANGELES – Manuel Williams Sr. died Thursday, April 19, 2007, in Los Angeles. He was 65.

Mr. Williams moved to Los Angeles in 1962. He was employed by the Los Angeles Transit Authority and was a member of St. Andrews Baptist Church.

He was preceded in death by a son, David Williams; and three sisters.

He is survived by his wife, Christine Williams; one son, Manuel Williams Jr. of Los Angeles; two brothers, John Williams and Charlie Williams, both of Los Angeles; two sisters, Alberta Tolliver and Annie Mae Tossint; and aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, cousins and other relatives, including Jackie and Bennie Miller and members of the Green, Middleton and Harris families of Vicksburg.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at St. Andrews Baptist Church under the direction of Angeles Funeral Home, 3875 W. Crenshaw Blvd., Los Angeles, CA 90008.

Virginia Irene Woods

ROLLING FORK – Virginia Irene Woods, 81, died Monday, April 23, 2007, at the Admiral Retirement Center in Jackson.

Visitation will be at noon Thursday, April 26, at Glenwood Funeral Home in Rolling Fork with services following at 2 p.m. at the funeral home with the Rev. Nick Smith officiating. Burial will be at the Hollandale Cemetery.

Mrs. Woods was preceded in death by her husband, Otis E. Woods; sisters, Jean Virden and Geneva Parrish; and her parents, Alvin and Maud Maxey.

Survivors include sons, Keith Woods and wife Fran, and Randal Woods and wife Mary Ann, all of Greenville; daughters, Andra Geise and husband Ben, of Southaven, Veleda King and husband Andy, of Jackson and Sandra Bridges and husband Wayne, and Melinda Perkins of Yazoo City; brother, A.C. Maxey of Canton; sister, Melbalene Hunt of Florence; and 12 grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.

Mrs. Woods was born Aug. 12, 1925, to the late Alvin and Maud Maxey. She lived most of her life in Delta City, Miss., and was a member of Delta City Baptist Church. She moved to Jackson after the death by her husband, lived with her daughter and later resided at the Admiral Retirement Center, where many friends and staff will surely miss her gentle spirit.

Our dear Mother was a wonderful, compassionate person who cherished her family and friends. Her Christian faith was strong, and she is now with the God she loved and worshipped all her life. Even with a full-time job and duties as a wife and mother of six children, she made sure that we were all at church every week. We thank God that we were blessed with such a loving, Christian mother and were given so many years with her, although never long enough.
