Mary Younger Davis

MAYERSVILLE — Mary Younger Davis of Mayersville, Miss., passed away with her family by her side on Saturday, Dec. 22, 2007, at University of Mississippi Medical Center in Jackson. She was 82.

Born on Aug. 26, 1925, in Eupora, Miss., she had served as deputy chancery clerk for more than 30 years. She will fondly be remembered as the Matriarch of Issaquena County. To her family, she will be remembered as “Mamaw” the passionate, opinionated, spunky and generous woman who loved her friends and family very much. Her cooking was renowned and the peanut butter brittle will be missed. She was a member of Rolling Fork United Methodist Church.

She is preceded in death by her parents, Barney and Exa Younger; her late husband, Henry Fred Davis.

She is survived by a daughter, Sue Davis Peden of Brandon; a son-in-law, Derryl W. Pedden, of Brandon; two sisters, Johnnie Cook of Mandeville, La., and Barney Jean Allen of Clinton; two grandchildren, Davis W. Peden of Dallas, Texas, and Mary Frances Peden Ferguson of Sydney, Australia.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Rolling Fork United Methodist Church with the Rev. Beth Miller officiating. Burial will follow at Mound Cemetery in Rolling Fork under the direction of Glenwood Funeral Home. Visitation will be from 1 p.m. Wednesday until the hour of service at the church.

Bertha Jean Flagg

Bertha Jean Flagg died Saturday, Dec. 22, 2007. She was 58.

Mrs. Flagg was born to the late Jimmie and Clara Moore. She graduated in 1967 from Rosa A. Temple High School. She received a bachelor of science degree in sociology from Alcorn State University in 1971 and a master of science degree in social work from the University of Tennessee in 1974. She also received certification as a mediator from CDR Associates in Boulder, Colo.

She was a member of 61 North Bypass Church of Christ. She was a senior labor relations specialist for the U.S. Army Civilian Human Resources Agency, where she received the Award for Outstanding Labor Relations Support, the 1995 WES Commander’s Award, the 1992 LMVD Commander’s Award and others and was named 1992 LMVD Woman of the Year.

Mrs. Flagg was a member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Inc., serving as charter president for its Mu Xi Omega Chapter of Vicksburg. She was a member of the Vicksburg-Warren Alcorn State University Alumni Chapter, Camille Art and Literary Club, the local NAACP, and other civic and service organizations. She was serving as chairman of the Rosa A. Temple Graduating Classes Riverfront Mural Committee.

Survivors include her husband, James E. Flagg Jr. of Vicksburg; two children, Capt. Robert F. Payne and Cara Roberson, both of Vicksburg; two brothers, James Moore and Harold Moore; three stepchildren, Courtney Wells, Sharunda Flagg and Donnell Flagg, all of Vicksburg; one granddaughter; and nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends, including Rita Wyatt and Mr. and Mrs. James Flagg Sr.

Lakeview Memorial Funeral Home has charge of arrangements.

Steven Gary Papa

VANCLEAVE — Steven “Steve” Gary Papa died Saturday, Dec. 22, 2007, at his home in Vancleave. He was 51.

Mr. Papa was preceded in death by his father, Gary Papa.

Survivors include his wife, Donna Papa; two daughters, Sara Papa and Erin Papa of Vancleave; his stepson, David Schueneman of Vancleave; his mother, Janet Papa of Vicksburg; and two sisters, Susanne Papa of Vicksburg and Joanne Papa of Brandon.

Private services are being handled by Bradford-O’Keefe Funeral Home in Ocean Springs.

Trose Hudson Tompkins

UTICA — Trose Hudson Tompkins died Sunday, Dec. 23, 2007, at his home in Utica. He was 64.

A lifelong resident of Utica, Mr. Tompkins was a retired employee of Holsom Bread Company and Interstate Brands, Inc. He was a U.S. Air Force Veteran and member of Utica Baptist Church.

He is survived by his wife, Darlene C. Tompkins of Utica; a son, Trose David Tompkins of Utica; three daughters, Tina Michaele Patton of Yelm, Wash., Amanda Jean Charfauros and Amy Jean Champion, both of Terry; six sisters, Dorothy Hall of Raymond, Sara Kelly of Jacksonville, Fla., Edith Ross of Mobile, Ala., Lois Henehan of Kansas City, Mo., Merle “Pap” Mize of Ridgeland and Ida McNiel of Madison; eight grandchildren and a great-grandson.

Services will be at 6 p.m. Thursday at Glenwood Funeral Home in Utica with the Rev. Ben James officiating. Visitation will be from 5 p.m. Thursday until the hour of service at the funeral home in Utica.
