Bernestine Hannon Dozier

On Aug. 30, 2007, Bernestine Hannon Dozier, 71, passed away in Brooklyn, N.Y.

She was born Bernestine Hannon on Aug. 22, 1936, in Vicksburg. She completed high school at the former Bowman High School and, even though she was not feeling well, she was able to attend the 50th-year class reunion in 2006. She was a wonderful and caring person who loved and cared about her friends and family. She will be greatly missed by those who knew and loved her.

She was preceded in death by her husband in 2005.

Bernestine recently retired from the New York Telephone Company after many years of employment.

Services will be held Wednesday, Sept. 5, 2007, at the First A.M.E. Zion Church, 54 McDonough St., Brooklyn, N.Y.

All arrangements are being handled by the Matthew Barrett-R.S. Saunders Funeral Home, 1204 Nostrand Ave., Brooklyn, NY 11225.

Bernestine is survived by one daughter, Deborah Armstrong, and two grandchildren, Drenna and her brother Nathaniel Armstrong III.

Thaddeus Jeffery

Thaddeus “Duke” Jeffery died Sunday, Sept. 2, 2007, as the result of a gunshot wound. He was 21.

Mr. Jeffery was of the Baptist faith.

He was preceded in death by his father, Lawerence Williams III; and a sister, Yolanda Ford.

Survivors include his mother, Mary Jeffery of Baton Rouge; his fiancee, Rhonda Cook of Vicksburg; four daughters, TyRhiana Jeffery, Keymaiya Jeffery, Zameria Smith and Melanie Lewis, all of Vicksburg; a son, Zavin Swartz of Vicksburg; a stepson, Anthony Lumpkins of Vicksburg; two sisters, Nina Ford of Vicksburg and Breauna Jeffery of Baton Rouge; and his paternal grandmother, Marilyn Williams of New Orleans.

Williams Funeral Service has charge of arrangements.

Albert Gibbes Newman

Albert Gibbes Newman, born April 22, 1918, in the Newman community near Edwards, passed away early Sunday morning. Albert was a resident of the Shady Lawn Nursing Home.

He was preceded in death by his mother, Carrie Gibbes Newman; his father, Talbot Baldwin Newman; his sisters, Jeanette Newman Bain and Frances Newman Evans; and his brothers, Talbot Baldwin Newman Jr. and Lacy Gibbes Newman.

He is survived by six nieces and nephews and by his longtime caregiver, Lena Mae Hartsfield of Utica.

A graveside service will be at 3 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 5, 2007, at Bethesda Presbyterian Cemetery near Utica.

Richard L. Whatley

Richard L. “Buddy” Whatley died Monday, Sept. 3, 2007. He was 71.

A native and lifelong resident of Warren County, he was the son of the late Marshal A. and Mittie Smithart Whatley. Mr. Whatley was deck equipment operator on the dredge Jadwin for the Corps of Engineers from 954 until his retirement in 1991. He was a well-known Christian man respected by all who knew him.

He was preceded in death by his parents and his wife, Patsy Whatley.

Mr. Whatley is survived by a daughter, Kim Whatley of Redwood; two sons, Ricky Whatley of Louisiana and Larry Barrett of Pattison; a son-in-law, Bruce Willis of Redwood; and a brother, Walter M. Whatley of Redwood.

Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday at Frank J. Fisher Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Harry Hawkins officiating. Burial will follow at Green Acres Memorial Park.

Visitation will be from 5 until 7 tonight at Fisher Funeral Home.

Pallbearers will be Terry Wells, Bill Ray Robinson, Hoyt Hogan, Sonny Martin, Perry Young and Bill Floyd.
