If you ask any fan of Paula Deen and her boys, they’ll probably think Katy Tillman Davis is one lucky girl.
The 28-year-old Vicksburg native got up close and personal with Paula Deen’s younger son, Bobby Deen, twice in two weeks. “Up close and personal” translates to chatting with him on the stage at the Vicksburg Convention Center and cooking with him for an upcoming episode of “Paula’s Party” to air on Food Network in April.
“Talk about pure luck,” said Davis, a 1996 Warren Central graduate who now lives in Clinton with her 7-year-old son.
During the early Deen show Jan. 13 in Vicksburg, Paula Deen, whose show is top-rated and cookbooks are best-selling, picked Davis from the audience to join her on stage and meet her sons.
“It was probably because I was wearing this shirt that was black and had fuschia rhinestones on it that spelled, ‘future MRS. BOBBY DEEN,’” she said.
“After Paula started the show, she said, ‘I’m looking for the girl in the black T-shirt with the pink writing on it and you know who you are!’ So I stood up, and she said, ‘Come to Mama!’” Davis said.
“So after that, I hugged her, she read my shirt to the audience of 1,900 and sent me on stage with Bobby. He was great! He told me I was beautiful, emphasized the fact that he was single, asked me a few questions and we went on with the show,” she said.
Another Vicksburg native, Lana Claire Freeman, joined the Deen family on stage during the second show that day.
But Davis also told Bobby Deen, 36, she’d be in Savannah, Ga., to film “Paula’s Party” the next week, courtesy of a contest she and her mother had entered months ago.
“So he told me he would see me Thursday in Savannah and gave me a hug and sweet kiss on the cheek,” she said. “It was just pure coincidence that I got to meet him here in Vicksburg.”
In the fall, Davis and her mother, Carol Buchwald, who lives in Chattanooga, Tenn., entered a contest to win tickets to film “Paula’s Party,” in Savannah.
“My mom sent a letter telling them she’d lost 30 pounds watching Paula’s show everyday while she exercises. She went on to say she never misses a show. She told them that we are best friends and talk every day and every conversation includes a Paula recipe or show,” Davis said.
Producers of the show responded by asking for a photo and what dates the two had available to attend a taping of the show.
The episode Davis will be featured on is called “All About Cheese,” and as a bonus, producers asked her to stay for an extra day to film a second episode, “Cooking through the Decades.”
“There was a segment where Bobby Deen was scheduled to cook goulash, his favorite food, and they thought it would be great if I could do the segment cooking with him,” she said.
Davis knew the next day’s episode was Paula Deen’s 60th birthday, and as a gift, Davis bought a spoon rest in Deen’s Gail Pittman pattern, Annabella, to take to the taping.
“It was the last show of the season, and it was the day that Oprah’s production team, Harpo, was coming to tape the behind-the-scenes making of ‘Paula’s Party,’” she said.
But she soon learned she was in for yet another surprise.
“Just when you think it doesn’t get any crazier than that, I showed up Friday morning, got my hair and makeup done, prepared some clever goulash questions and was all ready for the big moment when in walks Peter Brady!” she said. “Apparently Christopher Knight was there for the big event as well, and the former Brady ended up cooking my goulash with Bobby. The two of them cooked as Paula looked on and I sat in the audience just enjoying the moment,” she said.
Although it turned out not to be love at first sight, Davis said she wouldn’t trade anything for the experience.
“I think Bobby is a great guy – super sweet and a really big heart. And have you seen him? He is absolutely adorable. Any time you can meet your celebrity crush it just beats all!” she said.
