Wesley McCullough was supposed to lay a bunt down in the bottom of the 10th inning Saturday during Tupelo’s Class 5A playoff game against Vicksburg.

Then Wave coach Gary Enis changed the sign, and McCullough didn’t let his coach down.

The senior outfielder blasted a two-run home run in the third extra inning, giving Tupelo a 6-4 victory over the Gators, and ending Vicksburg High’s season.

&#8220I had the bunt on,” Enis said to the Northeast Mississippi Journal. &#8220We were trying to get the runner (Clint Alford) into scoring position.”

Enis then said just before the second pitch from standout VHS lefty Stanton Price – the winning pitcher in Friday’s 10-0 victory – he heard Vicksburg coach Jamie Creel call for one down the middle.

Enis changed the sign and McCullough deposited the pitch beyond the wall.

&#8220I got a fastball right down the plate,” McCullough told the Journal.

The loss spoiled a spirited effort by Vicksburg, the runners-up in Division 3-5A.

After the Gators lost 7-1 in Tupelo on Thursday, Vicksburg came back to win the second game behind a 10-run outburst in the first inning.

That win set up the deciding third game in North Mississippi.

In the deciding game, Vicksburg took a 1-0 lead in the first before Tupelo (31-2) scored two in the bottom of the inning. The Waves led 3-1 and again 4-2 going into the sixth.

Eric Coleman’s two-run home run in the top of the sixth tied the game at 4 and neither team could scratch a run until the 10th.

Tupelo had runners in scoring position in every inning after Coleman’s blast, but each time Vicksburg pitchers were able to work out of jams.

Bowen Woodson led the Gators’ offense with three hits, the only Vicksburg player with multiple hits.

Sophomore Chris Stratton pitched six innings in relief to improve to 5-0. His lone mistake was the home run to Coleman.
