The game didn’t get out of the second inning but it was still awesome enough for Vicksburg Red Sox pitcher Emil Ellis.

Ellis knocked in three runs off two hits and also got the pitching win in a 15-1 rout of the Vicksburg Pirates in a 10-year-olds’ Governor’s Cup pool game Saturday at Halls Ferry Park.

The win guaranteed a spot in today’s final bracket, possibly as a top seed, depending the outcome of the Red Sox’s game with the Greenwood Athletics (2-0). The Red Sox have allowed just three runs in two wins.

&#8220I did awesome,” Ellis said of his pitching. &#8220The only run they got came when Hunter (Lyons) and Derek (Dolan) got crossed up on a rundown. I also got two hits and that was awesome, too.”

The Pirates, an all-star team made up of players from the Vicksburg Baseball Association’s Civic League, finished its first Governor’s Cup 0-3. They lost earlier in the day to unbeaten Laurel-Jones County 12-2.

&#8220Overall, this was a good experience,” Pirates coach Pat Chambers said. &#8220All 14 kids gave it all they had. What makes me proud is that is we came a good way in just four or five weeks together.

&#8220We played in one other tournament this summer and that was the USSSA state in Louisville and we went 2-2 in that. We also played the Mustangs in some scrimmage games,” Chambers said.

The Pirates, though, were out of arms to face the powerful Red Sox, who are now 36-15 on the summer.

Pirates starter Casey Landers walked five straight batters to open the Red Sox’s first inning. All five runners scored to give the Red Sox a 5-0 lead.

The Pirates got a run back in the top of the second when Matthew Chambers singled and then scored on an error when he escaped a rundown off third base.

Pirates reliever Alex Stevens ran into trouble in the Red Sox’s second inning, giving up RBI hits to Jacob Breeden and Lee Middleton that extended the Red Sox to a 10-1 lead.

Conner Smith then drove in two runs off a hit to center following a hit and three walks. Ellis got his second hit of the game with a drive to left-center to score Ben Welp and Smith for a 15-1 lead. The game was called two batters later because of time.

The Red Sox had eight hits and drew eight walks. The top five batters in Zach Cox, Middleton, Drake Dorbeck, Dolan and George Tzotzolas each scored two runs.

Chambers, Marcus Ragan and Layne Tedder had hits for the Pirates.
