The Social Security Administration will be OK’d for a sign similar to that of its neighbor, the Vicksburg District of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers.
On April 3, Vicksburg zoning authorities had rejected the application, citing a zoning provision that allows only one ground sign per parcel.
City officials reversed that decision Monday, granting permission to Joe Bonelli of Joe Bonelli Construction to place a second sign at the property fronting 4155 E. Clay St.
The Social Security Administration hired Bonelli for the job to better direct customers to its new facilities. The local office had been on Shannon Street until December 2005.
Customers are supposed to enter through a driveway west of the building and park in a separate area from Corps employees. But a small, black and white sign is all that identifies it as such.
Vicksburg has adopted and enforced comprehensive signage controls in the past several years as part of a beautification effort.
S.C. Thomas, district manager for SSA, told zoning board members in April that 70 to 100 people visit the office daily, many from Yazoo and Hinds counties and Madison and Tensas parishes.
On Monday, Vicksburg Mayor Laurence Leyens said it was not unreasonable to allow the SSA to construct a larger, better sign.
“I don’t have a problem with this at all,” he said.
Victor Gray-Lewis, director of buildings and inspections, said Bonelli plans to place at the entrance a sign similar to the one marking the entrance to the Corps, to be no more than 66 square feet.
