It came a few days after everyone else stopped celebrating, but the St. Aloysius Lady Flashes still rang in the new year with a party.
Taylor George scored three goals in the first half, and Haley Davis and Robin Cooper netted two apiece as St. Al routed Murrah 12-1 on Friday in its first game of 2007. St. Al (6-6-2) outshot Murrah 28-2 in the game and led 7-0 at halftime.
George started the goalfest 4 1/2 minutes in when she ripped a shot in from the right side for a 1-0 lead. She added another goal 14 minutes later and completed the hat trick with a breakaway at the 29-minute mark of the first half, a goal that made it 5-0. George also assisted Davis’ first goal with a blooped cross that Davis knocked into the net with her body.
After George’s third tally, six different players scored the Lady Flashes’ last seven goals. Amanda Guizerix, Summer Stanton, Riley Griffith, Marie Booth and Maey Beth Croisdale each scored once. Booth and Croisdale also had assists in the first half.
(G) WC 1, NW Rankin 0
Mary Clare Scurria scored the game’s only goal early in the second half to give Warren Central (11-5-2) a victory over Northwest Rankin at its own tournament.
The win put the Lady Vikes into today’s semifinals at 3 p.m. at Millsaps College in Jackson. The championship game is at 7 p.m., also at Millsaps.
(B) NW Rankin 3, WC 1
Eric Richards scored on a penalty kick for Warren Central (6-10-2), but it wasn’t enough to beat Northwest Rankin Friday evening at Viking Stadium.
(B) Murrah 5, St. Al 1
Bray Jones scored on a second-half penalty kick for St. Al, but the Flashes were drubbed by Class 5A Murrah. St. Al plays today at 1 p.m. at St. Frederick, La.
