Playing short-handed for the second time this week, St. Aloysius coach Gene Rogillio saw his Lady Flashes at least extend St. Andrew’s to six innings.
The visiting Lady Saints left Bazinsky Park with a 13-3 run-rule victory over St. Al Thursday night. Both coaches knew afterward that the next time the two teams meet in Madison it could be different.
“You have to play with what you got,” said Rogillio who was without 2006 Vicksburg Post Player of the Year Sarah Kerut, All-Warren County pitcher Sarah Franco and a third starter in Katie Koestler. All three players were playing Thursday night for the St. Al basketball team at the South State 1A Tournament in Pisgah.
“We had so many kids out of position. The shortstop we used (Sara Howington) had never played there before while I think St. Andrew’s had its entire team,” said Rogillio, who expects to get the regular starters back now after the basketball team’s Thursday night loss.
“I know they were without Kerut and Franco, so its going to be different the next time we see them,” St. Andrew’s coach Bernie King said. “I was glad to see us swing the bats well. We struggled in our last game because we’ve been working on our defense.”
The good news for St. Al (0-2) is that they have found a catcher to replace the graduated Mary Myers Franco.
“Hannah Barrett was a true backstop back there. She made three great catches for outs and I don’t think anything got by her. And it was a position we knew we had to find someone new.”
Barrett also swung the bat well, getting two solid hits on her first two at bats. The first single, in the bottom of the second, drove in the Lady Flashes’ first run.
K.K. DeRossette also had two hits in her first two trips and she scored off Barrett’s hit to trim a 5-0 deficit to 5-1. Leadoff batter Stephanie Gwin also had two hits and scored a run in the fifth to make it 12-3 and extend the game to a sixth inning.
St. Andrew’s (2-2), however, had too much offense and pitching. They pounded out 14 hits and also got help from five St. Al errors.
Ashton King had four hits and scored three runs. Carolyn Hull had three hits and scored three times while Lindsey Graeber and Anna Drake each had two hits.
