Two Clay Street traffic lights removed|[03/27/07]

Two traffic lights were removed from downtown intersections and replaced with stop signs Monday and today as a result of a citywide traffic study begun five years ago.

The light at Clay and Walnut was removed Monday, and a light a block away at Clay and Monroe was to be taken down today.

The Clay and Walnut intersection now has a four-way stop sign, and the Monroe and Clay intersection will be a two-way stop with the signs on Monroe.

The changes are the last completed as results of the study begun in 2002, said Vicksburg Public Works Director Bubba Rainer.

Rainer said the traffic volume at the two intersections does not warrant lights.

Both intersections are near the west end of Clay with Walnut a block east of Washington Street and Monroe a block farther east.

Other traffic improvements completed over the last few years include the addition of turn lanes, wider intersections and the conversion of traffic signals to brighter, longer-lasting lamps.
