Fifteen years ago, the Starkville Lady Yellow Jackets handed coach Donny Fuller one of the worst losses in his standout career at Warren Central.

Tonight, Fuller hopes to gain a measure of revenge when the Starkville girls visit WC in a Class 5A North State satellite game.

&#8220It was my first year and it was one of the worst beatings of my career. It was at a satellite game in Starkville,” Fuller said of the 83-28 beatdown administered by Starkville in 1992.

Back then, Fuller was trying to rebuild the once-proud Lady Vike program that was coming off a 5-21 season the year before. In the time since, he has built WC back to prominence with a handful of appearances at the state tournament.

A win against Starkville (22-5) would get the Lady Vikes (23-8) a step closer to getting back to the Mississippi Coliseum after missing out last year.

&#8220That’s why it was big for us to beat Vicksburg for the division (title) because we get to be at home and if we win that one, we just need to win one out of two to go back to the Big House,” Fuller said. The Lady Vikes earned the home playoff game after they pulled out a heart-stopping 55-54 win over Vicksburg Friday for the Division 3-5A title at Greenville-Weston.

Starkville looks to be a tough match-up for WC.

&#8220They are a very good basketball team,” Fuller said. &#8220They have a real good guard in (Sanitra) Bush and another good one in (Courtney) Cannon.”

The Starkville pair combined for 34 points in the team’s 69-49 loss to Tupelo (30-2) in the Division 2-5A title game.

Tupelo is where Vicksburg (16-13) will be for its satellite game tonight at 7. The Lady Waves are led by All-State forward Katie Hancock who torched Starkville for 34 points in the division tournament final.

The Missy Gators will rely on 6-foot junior Taylor Ammons who scored 16 points and grabbed eight rebounds in the division tournament final against WC. Vicksburg also had strong guard play with Tiffany Williams and Alexus Stirgus combining for 28 points.

&#8220I think Vicksburg can go up there and get after Tupelo,” Fuller said. &#8220When she (coach Barbara Hartzog) goes to that four guard offense, she can really spread out your defense.”

Basking in the glow of its first Division 7-1A Tournament title, the St. Aloysius Lady Flashes (21-8) will host a satellite game for the first time when they play South Leake, the No. 4 team from Division 6-1A, at 7 p.m.

The Lady Flashes won the division title Friday, upsetting Bogue Chitto 55-54 when senior forward Sarah Kerut hit the game-winning jumper with three seconds left.

&#8220It was crazy,” said St. Al coach Kyt Bonner. &#8220We want to see how far we can go. I’ve been told South Leake is small but they like to dribble drive and shoot from outside.”

Around the area, Class 2A’s top-ranked team in the Hinds AHS Lady War Dawgs (29-2) will host the Heidelberg Lady Oilers in a South State 2A satellite game in Utica.

At Port Gibson, the Lady Blue Waves (21-12) will host Gautier in a Class 4A South State satellite game. Port Gibson defeated Mendenhall 52-47 Friday night behind 15 points from Nakia Dotson to win the Division 6-4A crown in Florence.
