Cleveland High kept both Vicksburg and Warren Central from enjoying an unbeaten run through the Lady Vikes Invitational Saturday.

The Lady Wildcats (8-2), who won the Class 3A state title in 2006, downed the Missy Gators 9-0 en route to winning three games on Saturday. Vicksburg (4-3), Warren Central (5-6) and St. Aloysius (5-1) all finished 2-1 in the seven-team tournament.

“We hit the ball pretty well against both Vicksburg and Warren Central,” Cleveland coach David Price said. “I think person-to-person, we’re pretty close to where we were when we won 3A.”

Cleveland’s only losses this season have been to defending 5A champion South Panola and 4A power New Hope.

Vicksburg stayed close for two innings, trailing just 1-0 with back-up pitcher Claire Ray in the circle.

Against Cleveland, it was the top of the third when the Lady Wildcats scored eight times on five hits, three walks and two errors. Lindsey Mullins’ two RBI double was the big blow.

Emily Hatcher faced just nine Missy Gators to claim the win. Ray had a leadoff single in the first for Vicksburg’s lone hit.

Yocum said the Missy Gators have a busy week coming up. They play Yazoo County Tuesday, Natchez Cathedral on Thursday, Warren Central on Friday and then go to Alexandria, La., to play in the Grace Tournament on Saturday.

Cleveland 3, WC 2

Two costly fielding errors allowed Cleveland to build a 3-1 lead and then hold on against WC.

Tiffany Fuller came in and pitched three scoreless innings in relief of WC starter Andi Hearn, who took the loss. WC had four hits with Mandy Fuller having an RBI hit in the first. Hearn and Shawn Johnson had a hit and a run scored for the Lady Vikes.

Vicksburg 4, St. Joe 2

Kristi Shelby struck out eight and allowed just two hits as Vicksburg (4-2) won its second game tournament on Saturday. Claire Ray scored two runs and had a hit to lead the Missy Gators. Kaci Flaharty and Shelby also scored, while Samantha Frith had a hit.

St. Al 3, Mangham 2

Taylor Ann Hasty pitched two innings of relief and then gave herself the win when she knocked in Stephanie Gwin with the winning run in the bottom of the fourth inning.

Sarah Franco started but left after two innings with a sore arm. She struck out four. Hasty pitched the last two, giving up two unearned runs and three hits. She fanned three.

St. Al 13, St. Joe 3

The Lady Flashes (5-1) used a 12-run first inning to smash the Lady Irish. Haley Heggins capped the rally with a two-run double and then circled home after an error by the leftfielder. McGuffee had a RBI triple to start the onslaught. Gwin, Taylor George and Hannah Barrett all had a hit and scored in the frame. Catelyn Park went three innings to grab the mound win.
