Californian arrested here not charged

A California man arrested in Vicksburg two months ago for a parole violation was not charged for a juvenile sexual battery or the Oakland homicides in which he was wanted for questioning.

Conti Lashawan Tillis, 33, of Richmond, was picked up March 20, following a three-day investigation by local law agencies and the U.S. Marshals Service. He was located in a home in the 8600 block of U.S. 61 and arrested without incident.

California police had notified the U.S. Marshals Gulf Coast Regional Fugitive Task Force in Jackson that Tillis was thought to be in the Vicksburg area. The federal agents contacted local law agencies to initiate a joint search for Tillis, who had been on the run from California authorities since the end of February, a Richmond police spokesman said.

Authorities said Tillis had violated his parole and, at the time, was wanted for questioning in “more than one homicide in the Oakland area” and a sexual assault of a minor.

However, California law enforcement and Tillis’ attorney, Byron Thompson, said Tillis was never charged in any of the crimes.

Also, Warren County Sheriff Martin Pace said no charges will be filed locally against anyone who might have aided the fugitive.
