Jim Bill Grissom
NEWELLTON – Jim Bill Grissom died Monday, Aug. 18, 2008, at University Medical Center in Jackson. He was 80.
Born in Rover, Ark., Mr. Grissom had lived in Tensas Parish for 66 years. He was a retired manager of Somerset Plantation near Newellton and was a member of the Church of God in Old River, Calif.
He is survived by his wife, Wanda Taylor Grissom of Newellton; four sons, Mark Steven Grissom of Vicksburg, Jimmie D. Grissom of Baton Rouge, Michael Wayne Grissom of Orange Park, Fla., and Nickie Grissom of Brusly, La.; one sister, Dorothy Barrett of Oklahoma City, Okla.; 13 grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Friday at Crothers-Glenwood Funeral Home in Tallulah with the Rev. Don Thornton officiating. Burial will be at Legion Cemetery in Newellton. Visitation will be from 5 until 7 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home.
Solomon Harris Sr.
Solomon Harris Sr. died Monday, Aug. 18, 2008, at River Region Medical Center. He was 44.
Mr. Harris was of the Baptist faith.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Rosalie Harris Taylor and Squire Harris; a sister, Clottie Rounds; and his grandfather, Dan Harris.
Survivors include five sons, Solomon Harris Jr., Roosevelt Harris, James Morris, Maurice Morris and David Robinson, all of Vicksburg; one daughter, Christine Morris of Vicksburg; his grandmother, Clottie Anderson of Vicksburg; a brother, Roosevelt Rounds of Vicksburg; five sisters, Betty Harris of Eudora, Ark., and Bobbie Rounds, Sharon Becker, Rosalie Becker and Joanna Atlas, all of Vicksburg; four grandchildren; and nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends, including Telisa Morris, Johnny Reynolds and Lucinda Williams, all of Vicksburg, Dan Harris Jr. of Cleveland and Minnie Denson of Jackson.
Williams Funeral Service has charge of arrangements.
Verna Pettway
GREENWOOD, Ark. – Verna Pettway died Monday, Aug. 18, 2008, at Fort Smith Hospital. She was 80.
Mrs. Pettway was a retired LPN and of the Baptist faith.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Dewey and Sarah Ila Stewart; her husband, Duke Pettway; a brother, Donald Stewart; three sisters, Vivian Mongold, Velma Smyers and Valeta Stewart; one grandson; and one great-granddaughter.
Survivors include her four sons, Bill Pettway and his wife, Patty, of Booneville, Ark., Ron Pettway of Fort Smith, Ark., Gary Pettway and his wife, Beth, of Greenwood, and David South and his wife, Julie, of Central City, Ark.; three daughters, Sandy Goodwin and her husband, Joe, Linda Strawser and her husband, Chuck, and Sheila Dolan and her husband, Dennis, all of Greenwood; one brother, John Stewart of Barling, Ark.; two sisters, Mildred Redding and Betty Powell, both of Fort Smith; 16 grandchildren; and 22 great-grandchildren.
Services will be at 12:30 p.m. Thursday at Faith Baptist Church in Jenny Lind, Ark. Burial will follow at the U.S. National Cemetery at Fort Smith. Visitation will be from 1 until 9 tonight at McCon-nell Funeral Home in Greenwood, and the family will visit with friends from 6 until 9.
Pallbearers will be A.J. Pettway, Brian Strawser, Justin Dolan, Eric Goodwin, Joe Goodwin, Chris Pettway, Kevin Pettway, Zak Pettway and John Nichols.
Honorary pallbearers will be David Pettway, Tommie Pettway, Cory McCain, David Summers, Cole Trotter, David Williams and Seth Gately.
Nick Bartley Trim
PORT GIBSON – Nick Bartley Trim, age 85, passed away on Monday, Aug. 18, 2008, at Longview Care Center in Missouri Valley, Iowa.
Nick was born Dec. 25, 1922, in Port Gibson to William Bradley and Mary Leola Kelly Trim. Nick served in the U.S. Navy for 28 years, retiring as a master chief petty officer. After his retirement, he taught at Hinds Community College.
Nick was preceded in death by his parents; his brothers, Bradley Terrell, Eddie Lee and Aaron Riley; and his wives, Lucille S. Trim and Vernita M. Trim.
Nick is survived by his daughters, Sarah Altizer and husband Kevin of Landgraaf, Netherlands, Ret. Maj. Gen. Martha Rainville of Alexandria, Va., and Kelly Ortner and husband Rod of Missouri Valley; stepdaughter, Robin Bailey Andrews and husband Bin of Port Gibson; grandchildren, Leslie Edwin and husband Gifty of Atlanta, Jennifer Rainville of New Orleans, Nicholas Rainville of Nashua, N.H., Alex Rainville of Alexandria, Bailey Andrews of Port Gibson and Bradley Ortner of Missouri Valley; and great-grandchildren, Ivy Trim and Violet Edwin, both of Atlanta.
Visitation will be from 12:30 p.m. until 2 p.m., the time of the service, Saturday at Port Gibson Baptist Church. Burial will be at Wintergreen Cemetery.
The Rev. Tim Rowan will officiate. Glenwood Funeral Home in Port Gibson is in charge of arrangements.
