Awards
Nathan Irby of Vicksburg has received the 2008 forest products Outstanding Master’s Student Award at Mississippi State University. A forest products graduate student, he is the son of Buddy Irby and received his bachelor’s degree from MSU.
Degrees
Kristin Nicole Ellis and Zachariah Lloyd “Zac” Tillotson, both of Vicksburg, are candidates for degrees from Copiah-Lincoln Community College. Commencement exercises will be at 10 a.m. May 17 in H. L. Stone Stadium on the Wesson campus.
Honor societies
Audrey Elaine White has been inducted into Alpha Epsilon Lambda national honor society at Jackson State University. She is pursuing a doctorate in urban and regional planning with a concentration in community development and housing. A 2000 honor graduate of Vicksburg High School, she is the daughter of Lenny and Brenda Smith and Anderson White II. She is the granddaughter of Pauline Harris and the late Arthur J. Harris and Anderson White Sr. and the late Helen White.
Lexie Strong has been inducted into Alpha Lambda Delta national honor society for first-year students at Samford University in Birmingham, Ala. A 2007 graduate of Warren Central High School, she is the daughter of Jeff and Linda Vicksburg students Kelsey M. Artman, a senior physical education/teaching and coaching major, and Whitney C. Saxon, a junior educational psychology major, have been inducted into Kappa Delta Pi education honor society at Mississippi State University.
Scholarships
Christopher Julian Hood, a senior at Warren Central High School, is the recipient of an academic scholarship to Morehouse College in Atlanta. He is the son of Columbus and Julia Anderson Hood. He is the grandson of Leola Long and the late Peter Anderson Sr. of Vicksburg and Lillie Mae Hood and the late Prelo Hood Jr. of Greenville, S.C.
Shaun Williams of Vicksburg and Tracy Peyton of Bentonia were among students who received Robert L. Elliott M.D. and Mary C. Elliott M.D. Scholarships at Delta State University. Both are biology majors.
Catherine Rowan, a mathematics education major from Vicksburg, was among students receiving a Delta Education Initiative Undergraduate Scholarship at Delta State University.
Competitions
Mississippi State student Nicole Ellis of Vicksburg was one of four team members making up SimpleFitness, an on-demand fitness training video site that won third place in the final round of the 2008 E-Business Plan Competition held by MSU’s College of Business & Industry. The team received $250 for its entry, which was judged on content of a written business plan and presentation.
Michael Goodin, a student in the Cecil C. Humphreys School of Law at the University of Memphis, was on the team that earned a second place at the national championship of the American Bar Association’s Appellate Advocacy Competition. A graduate of Warren Central High School, he is the son of David and Mary Goodin.

University of Southern Mississippi Graduation – Friday at Reed Green Coliseum on the Hattiesburg campus; 1:30 p.m. for the Colleges of Business, Science and Technology, and Education and Psychology and 6:30 p.m. for the Colleges of Arts and Letters and Health; Gulf Coast graduates’ ceremonies will begin at 10 a.m. Saturday at the Mississippi Coast Coliseum in Biloxi; George A.
