It took four years for Porters Chapel Academy to taste soccer success.

On Monday at PCA, the Eagles (1-5) won their first-ever boys soccer game, beating Lee Academy of Clarksdale 3-0.

The remarkable part of the win, though, is that the Eagles won with a split starting lineup.

“We have nine girls and five boys on the team and for the first three or four matches, we started all nine of the girls,” said new PCA coach Jason Hopkins, who for the past three seasons had been the boys coach at St. Aloysius.

“The school had called me wanting to see if I’d do this, and I thought it was for a boys team, and then I see all these girls,” Hopkins said with a laugh.

“I wouldn’t trade any of our girls,” said PCA’s Andrew Wall. “They play hard.”

“We had never won. But we got the first win in the history of PCA soccer,” added Eagles’ keeper Michael Wilson.

“It was fun and exciting to win,” said seventh-grader Sara Beth Sims. “They (Lee) didn’t take it too well that we beat them.”

Senior Elizabeth Magee said playing against the guys is nothing new for her.

“I’ve been playing against guys since the seventh grade. It’s fun,” she said.

Unless they’re playing River Oaks. The Monroe school is a soccer power, having won the MPSA Class A title last year before moving up to AA this season. They brought 38 players to PCA.

Hopkins, though, said his Eagles began adding pieces during the season that have helped out. Getting Wilson in the net and then having Jason Greer and Brian Biedenharn join boosted the team. Matt Perry, Greer and Biedenharn all scored goals against Lee Academy.

“And Victoria Darden almost had one, her shot hit the pole,” Wall said.

Hopkins had a feeling PCA might be successful against Lee.

“We had played Immanuel Christian to a 3-1 score and I really thought we turned a corner in that game. And then I saw where Immanuel had beaten Lee by two goals. I thought we had a good chance,” Hopkins said.

The Immanuel game was also the first time PCA had scored in five matches. Mary Beth Cristal got the goal.

“We’ve progressed in every game. In our first game against Brookhaven, we played two scoreless halves and then lost on an own goal two minutes deep into an extended period,” Hopkins said.

The Eagles are scheduled to play Lee again on Thursday in Clarksdale.
