As many as four local prep football players could be signing with four-year colleges on Wednesday, the first day of the National Signing period.
Delmon Robinson, a top 30 senior prospect, is expected to honor his near eight-month commitment to coach Sylvester Croom’s Mississippi State Bulldogs on National Signing Day Wednesday, the first day high school players can officially sign national letters of intent.
Vicksburg High coach Alonzo Stevens said Robinson will sign with State at 2 p.m. at the school’s fieldhouse. He will be one of three Gators signing on Wednesday. All-County wide receiver John Qualls will sign with either Alcorn State or Hinds Community College. Cordell Watkins, a speedy defensive back/specialist, will sign with Hinds.
At Warren Central, assistant coach Ross Coley said three Vikings are expected to sign at 9:30 a.m. at the field house.
“I told them they need to have their mind made up by 7:30 Wednesday morning,” Coley said.
All-County defensive tackle Bennie Peoples (6-3, 270) is the Vikings’ top prospect. He’s been offered a scholarship by the University of West Alabama, a member of the Gulf South Conference. He also has an offer to Copiah-Lincoln and a number of other junior colleges.
Peoples is close to being academically qualified, Coley said.
Viking wide receiver Quinton Truly has been protected by Hinds and will sign with the Eagles on Wednesday morning. Offensive tackle David Henderson (6-5, 310) has been offered a scholarship by Southwest Community College and may sign Wednesday.
At Vicksburg, Stevens said new Alcorn State coach Ernest T. Jones made a number of visits to see the Gators.
“He tried to come in late on Delmon and John. But Coach Croom’s staff has done a great job keeping Delmon. Hinds has been on John real early but he’s trying to decide whether to go Alcorn or Hinds,” Stevens said.
Robinson, who will be signed as a defensive back, is an NCAA qualifier. He was named a Co-MVP of Region 3-4A last week and started at defensive back for Mississippi in the Mississippi-Alabama All-Star game in Mobile in December. In his high school career, Robinson set a Warren County record with 103 receptions while playing receiver and running back. He also played defensive back.
Former Porters Chapel Academy player and Hinds CC linebacker Chris Mixon is expected to sign with Delta State on Wednesday. Mixon was the Vicksburg Post’s 2005 Offensive Player of the Year. Last year with Hinds, Mixon finished as the team’s second leading tackler — and was 17th in the nation, with 100 tackles — as a starting linebacker. He also had 22 tackles for loss.
Delta State, which advanced to the second round of the NCAA Division II playoffs last year, will sign Mixon as a linebacker.
Mixon had been recruited by a number of schools, including Arkansas, Southern Miss and Ole Miss.
