Daniel Leonard Caldwell

Daniel Leonard Caldwell, born Feb. 15, 1947, in Vicksburg, had his home going Thursday, Feb. 14, 2008. He was the oldest child of the late Daniel and Lillian Gray Caldwell. His paternal grandparents were the late Jonas and Rebecca Armstrong Caldwell. His maternal grandparents were the late Simpson and Hattie Mackson Gray. He was also preceded in death by his brother-in-law, Kler H. Jones Sr.

At the age of 4, Dan began the first grade. He was educated in the Warren County and Vicksburg public school systems. During these years he participated in the 4-H exhibits at the County Fair, receiving several Blue Ribbon prizes. He built a working telescope from raw material, and another prize-winning exhibit was a miniature model of the development of paper, from the tree to the factory. He graduated from Rosa A. Temple High School, class of 1963. Dan was a member of the marching and concert bands in high school. He earned a degree in chemistry from Alcorn A&M College in 1967. While attending Alcorn he was a member of the Marching Braves Band. Often his family would travel to Alcorn for a Saturday afternoon football game to hear Dan’s clarinet solo. Dan was baptized at the Oak Grove M.B. Church, under the Rev. B.L. Thomas, at the age of 7. He attended Sunday school and served on the Usher Board.

Dan began working at IBM in 1967 as an engineer. He worked there for 25 years before retiring in 1992. While working at IBM, he received a master’s degree in chemical engineering from New York University. Dan married his beloved wife, Mary, in 1968. They had two children: a son, Daniel Stephen Caldwell of Plano, Texas, and a daughter, Dr. Nicole L. Caldwell of Dallas, Texas. He had been a member of Prestonwood Baptist Church since 1983. Dan was a faithful volunteer in the Broadcast Tape Ministry. He is also survived by a sister, Elsie Caldwell Jones of Harrisburg, Pa.; and a brother and sister-in-law, Herbert and Indiana Caldwell of Vicksburg. Dan also leaves a host of cousins, in-laws and friends.

Services were at 11 a.m. Thursday at Prestonwood Baptist Church. Burial followed at Ridgeview Memorial Park in Allen, Texas, with Sparkman Dickey Funeral Home, 17501 N. Dallas Parkway, Dallas, Texas, 75287 in charge of arrangements.

W.G. Craig

DELHI — W.G. “Bill” Craig, 79, longtime resident of Delhi, La., went home to be with the Lord on Thursday, Feb. 21, 2008, at the Richland Parish Hospital in Delhi.

He was a member of the Masonic Lodge for over 55 years and was currently affiliated with Delhi Masonic Lodge No. 120. He was a former SFC in the U.S. Army during the Korean Conflict and was a longtime youth baseball coach and mentor. Bill was a member of the First Baptist Church of Delhi for over 45 years and was a longtime deacon.

Any planned memorials may be made to the Louisiana Baptist Children’s Home or to the Shriners Hospital.

Mr. Craig was preceded in death by his parents, Tom Wesley Craig and Posie Viola Hopper Craig.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 23, 2008, in the chapel of Cox Funeral Home in Delhi with the Rev. Eddie Fuller and Dr. Marcus Murphy officiating.

Interment will be at the Newton Cemetery under the direction of Cox Funeral Home.

Visitation will be held from 5 until 8 p.m. Friday at Cox Funeral Home in Delhi.

Pallbearers will be Bruce McEacharn, Bruce Tatum, Charles Parker, Bobby Wooten, Albert Christman and Shelton Parker.

Survivors include his wife of 55 years, Mary Lyndal Craig of Delhi; two sons, Dr. Johnny B. Craig of Shreveport and Steve Craig and wife Rhonda of Delhi; four grandchildren, Deidre Craig Dement, Steven Douglas “Doug” Craig II, Sarah Elizabeth Craig and Rachel Parish Craig; two great-grandchildren; and a sister, Eva Lou Maynor of Shreveport.

Frank Kelly Garvey

CLEVELAND — Frank Kelly Garvey died Wednesday, Feb. 20, 2008, at Forrest General Hospital in Hattiesburg. He was 87.

Mr. Garvey was born in Vicksburg. He served in the U.S. Army in the South Pacific during World War II. He retired as an Illinois Central Railroad engineer and was a golfer.

He was preceded in death by his parents, William and Mildred Garvey; his wife, Sarah Garvey; and two sisters, Alma Palermo and Agnes Loyacono.

Survivors include his son, Michael Kelly Garvey of Hattiesburg; four daughters, Jenne Garvey Rodriguez of Lincoln, Neb., Janet Garvey Baradell of Chapel Hill, N.C., Kathleen Garvey Braun of Gulfport and Rebecca Garvey Currie of Harrison, Tenn.; seven grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Monday at Our Lady of Victories Catholic Church in Cleveland. Burial will follow at North Cleveland Cemetery under the director of Ray Funeral Home of Cleveland.

Visitation will be from 6:30 until 7:30 p.m. Sunday at the church with rosary being said at 7:30.

Pallbearers will be Michael Kelly Garvey Jr., Timothy Garvey, Matthew Currie, Gavin Currie, Thomas Currie and Zachary Rodriguez.

Honorary pallbearers will be Sgt. Bryan Garvey on active duty in Iraq; the Delta Senior Golfers and the Delta Division of the Illinois Central Railroad Retirees.
